We have the winner !

Remy congratulations!!!
I've liked that photo of yours ever since it was in the first RFF book!

Someone asked who the other finalists were and this may also be a good thread to 'reveal' ourselves and say something about the photos we submitted.

I was very fortunate to have one of my photos in the final round (photo #8).
This was a snap of a street artist at Union Square in San Francisco.
Her performance with the glass ball was almost in slow-motion so it was fairly easy to compose and take the photos I wanted. Snapped 3-4 photos and kept walking.

Camera used was a Leica M3

How ironic that this camera goes to a decided digital convert. 😀

"Then they pulled me back in!"

Thanks for the kind words, Rich. Compliments are always great to get and when they come from certain people they even mean a bit more to me.

Yours was one of the photos I recognised straight away, BTW. It's one of those RFF icons, I guess. 🙂

Indeed. What can I say? 🙂 Anyone wanna buy a brand new Zeiss Ikon? 😛

Congratulations from photo #2!

Congratulations from photo #2!

Congratulations to RML and may you enjoy your new camera and use it in good health (as my grandmother would have said). I would have voted for it, but I only had one vote and really liked the camera 😉

And I'd also like to thank the 14% or so voters who chose my photograph. I am touched that so many enjoyed it.

PS, I know that I'm kind of interested in learning about the 11 other finalist photographs and their photographers. So to get the ball rolling, I'll introduce myself and just mention a little about my photograph:

Photo#2

This photograph was taken in 1975 in Paris, France. I was 18 years old at the time and touring Europe by bicycle. I wanted a small camera to take with me and my Uncle offered to loan me is Kodak Retina IIIc. It was a cool camera as I could tie the case to my belt (at least that was the idea) and shoot a lot of photographs by virtue of the quick access to the camera.

In all I was in Europe for 6 weeks and shot only 2 rolls of plus-x film. Most of it was shot on a Sunday in Paris, just walking around while most of the shops were closed and people were in church. Photo #2 is one from that roll.

Cut to: 2006. I have now graduated to shooting mostly on my 2 Fuji 6x9 rangefinders, but have last year also purchased a Kodak Retina IIIc on ebay for $80. It's still the same funky camera with the gorgeous 50mm lens that I remembered...

Ok, let's hear from the rest of the finalists!

I would like to thank those who voted for number 11, I took it. Not much of a story behind the image, I was shooting in downtown Houston on a rainy day with my two boys when I saw the image appear, raised my camera and took it. Thanks to the judges for choosing it and the 18 of yall who voted for it 🙂

Congratulations Remy !!!
I've really liked that photo ever since it I came across it in the gallery. Well done. Enjoy the Ikon 🙂

Congratulations Remy. An excellent photograph amongst 11 other excellent photographs. You should all have got a camera 🙂

When I looked through the HCB images online several weeks ago, the one that I liked the most was Hyeres 1932. I had a hunch that the winning photo would involve a bicycle in motion.
Nice work, Remy! 🙂
Now I'm anxious to know the story behind your photo. Why you selected a rainy day, shutter speed, camera, lens and film info, etc, etc. Once again, congratulations!

Congrats....

Congrats....

Congrats remy for your win, lovely prize. People were interested in who was in the finals so let me introduce myself. I visit here often, post only sometimes in the ContaxG bin, great forum. I had two images in the finals (I hope I attached them correctly). The first was taken in Quincy Mass. last fall. Heavy rains came and it flooded the street and the parking lot of the apartment building we were staying at. A few did not move their cars and were regretting it for days after. The second image was taken while visiting Atlantic City a few years ago. We drove over and stayed at a comfort inn on the edge of town. After checking in we noticed these very well dressed woman in the lobby and they introduced themselves and asked if we would like to join them for church service. I talked my wife into joining them and asked if I could take some photographs. This particular one was taken as the woman in the photograph went around the room and said prayers for everyone in the room. She was very animated and intense. We spent an hour with them, I took about eight rolls and had an experience that i will never forget, wonderful people. The kicker was we left, did the AC thing, came back at 11pm and they were still in the room singing and dancing! unbelievable

Gefeliciteerd Remy,

Now you can use your m-mount lenses on the ZI and the Zeiss lens on your R-D1. Tell some more about your winning picture.

About the winning photo.... Well, what I can remember from that day.... It was the end of February 2004 (28th to be exact). As you can see in the photo it was/had been raining, even snowing in the days before. In those days I was often going out to shoot, walking around Amsterdam, both to get some physical exercise (growing a little too fat around the waste) and to get out of the house (30 square meter apartment on the third floor in a drafty old house in the "de Pijp" district).

I love reflections and when I saw this large puddle with the reflection of the Carré theatre house in it, I had to try to capture it. I was walking around that puddle for some to find the right angle when, out of the blue, a cyclist rode past. I was there and saw the effect it had. In a flash I was thinking I could shoot that same shot if just another cyclist would pass by in the same way. Cyclists are kinda predictable: they don't want to get wet feet. 🙂 Anyway, the weather wasn't nice, I was cold and really wanted to move on but still stood there waiting for just one more cyclist to come by. It took what seemed like ages! In Amsterdam! Just my luck, no doubt. When I was all but to give up this cyclist rode by, in the right spot. Of course, I had had time aplenty to set up the camera, figure out the angle and what to put in the picture, set shutter speed, focus and f-stop. Dang, I couldn't have been more prepared than at that time! Yet, I still almost missed the shot: I had not calculated how fast a cyclist can really go over such a short distance so close to me. With everything in place, it was still a grab shot, more luck than wisdom. Everything fell in place in that fraction of a second. When I had taken the shot I left the scene, longing for some dry and warm place.

Funny thing is, in the weeks after that I didn't shoot much at all, and definitely nothing worthwhile. I guess my mind was already preparing for my second stay in India from the last week of March.
