Why is that all the good deals, all the dreamed-of cameras, lenses and film, show up in front of you PRECISELY and EXACTLY when you're either broke, or your purchasing power is significantly curtailed?

Also,... how can anyone explain that the best shots, the most attractive passer-by, the really dramatic, comic or cute situation has to come up when we don't have a camera in hand, or we're changing film rolls, or we are under any other but that one which would allow us to photograph it?

Hank's Dillemma?

Shopper's conundrum?

Shooter's Shutter Fart?

Sheer bad luck?

It's happened to me, lately... both. I've seen great deals on gear that I'd be willing to sink my teeth into, and neat situations that I couldn't photograph for lack of a camera, readiness or both.

It is disturbing... and needs a name.

Further suggestions?

Thanks!!

I simply say, "oh crap!" Maybe a few other things, too. ;)

Why, what'd ya find? :p

I've been thinking seriously about buying a dSLR, and a couple of hours ago I found an offer in the *Bay for a Nikon D700 that's about $200 the regular price. It seems to be a reliable seller with over 1000 satisfactory feedback comments and a record of selling high-end gear (not Leica, alas, but expensive glass and bodies, like my current infatuation, a Nikon 24-7- f2.8).

Then, there were a few Leica items, like a 'cron 90mm in silver, second version selling in P.net for $400.

In my olden days before sabbatical, I would not have to think about snatching these items. Granted, I cannot pay for them at the end of the month, but they wouldn't set me back terribly so. But my current financial condition does not allow me to do that, so... there you go.

<says "crapunzel, crapunzel, what have you done to your hair!">

This might be another corollary of Murphy's Law, much like Finagle's Law:

Anything that can go wrong, will—at the worst possible moment

If it's meant to be it will happen...be that a great deal or a great photo...

I've missed out on super deals on ebay/garage sales/swap meet, etc. only to find something better..."better" being either lower price for the exact same item or an item that actually worked out better than the original one I wanted...
Lately, I've been looking for and/or bidding on items I need not just something I want...
If I just want something I may end up paying more than I should...if it's something I need I'm more willing to wait...

The same applies to photographs...I happened upon an event, rescue helicopter ready to take-off from a local public park...I had the shot in mind before getting there...I made a bad call and drove to where I thought I could get to the scene, but couldn't...
Finally, I got to where I could take the picture, the helicopter was already off the ground...my original shot was gone...
I re-evaluated the scene and made it work...actually it turned out better than I thought it would...

Sometimes we don't get want we want when we want it...but if you just stick with it it will come around again...sometimes better than we could ever imagine...

maybe it is a perception, caused by lack of funds, which cause more desire to own objects we don't need.

" I'd love to buy it, but I am broke"
oh, I am so TANHA'ed right now !

I read somewhere that Winogrand, after having shot 36 frames like crazy, was taking his time to reload. He was asked by one of his students if he didn't feel mad because of the shots he missed during reloading. The answer was: "There are no shots while I reload". I love this answer. It means to me that YOU MAKE the picture, you don't just TAKE a picture which exists.

I seem to recall a song by Alanis Morrissette (sp?) to this effect, the refrain going something like "It's like rain on your wedding day; a free ride, when you've already paid; good advice, that just just didn't take -- and who would have thought? It figures!"

So maybe it's the "It figures" rule, which is indeed a corollary of Murphy's Law.

I'll remember this one - and use it when I can. Thanks!

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well I could tell by her blood-stained hands

You cant always get what you want
: :
But if you try sometimes you just might find
: :
You get what you need.

There is one of Murphy's laws that comes pretty close, same sort of phenomenon anyway: Anything expensive that you buy will go on sale the next day.

I am somewhere between Winogrand's quote and saying "that's life." :)

I like the fact that I see "shots" even when I have no camera. That's why I started carrying a camera in the first place. Now my eye is better educated, I can see shots I could never take, but am still glad to have seen. I don't think it's possible to always be able to take every shot you see, but I just try to find the ones I can.

There are a ton that will go by, and my eye will get better at finding them the more I take. So I don't worry about it. I am crushed occasionally when I stumble upon one that would be so perfect, but some things just aren't meant to be. It's that feeling of loss that compels me to pick up my camera. I gladly carry the image in my head, however.

Yes, yes and yes...!!!

Just today I missed a shot because I forgot to unlock the shutter...I know better...but this still happens...I miss more shots due to this or by not cocking the shutter and last but not least (and not really my fault) I'm at the end of the roll...:bang:

Shopper's Block?

Shooter's Block?

Leica's (or Nikon's or Cosina, Contax or Canonet) Crisis?

You guys are clever at these things... ;)

In the meanwhile, it seems that "do'h" will have to do in some cases. Still, what's there for finding, say, a very nice Elmar 90/f4 collapsible for $120, and not have the funds to grab it.

Poverty perhaps...

I guess I don't know how lucky I really am...

Take care! :)
