Haven't posted a proper photograph online since Flickr changed things up back in May. I think I've just outgrown social photo-sharing sites, or social photo-sharing sites doesn't work for my photography.

Now I'm wanting to take control of how my photographs are presented, and will likely use WordPress.org to set up a portfolio/blog.

I was thinking about using basic hosting through Lunarpages, but I wanted to know what people on this forum were using, or if anyone can recommend one. I tried using the search function on this forum but results were from 2010/2006.

Just undertaking the same task and have elected to use Smugmug at $150 p.a.

Good support, ability to sell and excellent presentation potential. Images look really good on their site and use of a vault to store originals is an added benefit.

Still working on my site so nothing yet to show but might be worth a look for you.

The one I'm using is on my "about" page where I also acknowledge Wordpress. Took me "some" time to design it and figure out how to make it work, and what I want it to do. It's still a work in progress, and there are some things that need improving...but that will come.

I've been using both Flickr and ipernity, posting many of the same image files to see if I prefer one over the other, and how the files change when compressed by them, and how linking the images to the site works.

Let us know what you find and when you launch.

Can't go wrong with Wordpress.
I host my own website on one of my servers (I build data warehouses for a living).

They've hosted my sites for more than a decade. They are very reliable, their customer service people are Americans who speak English and are very, very knowledgeable and helpful. You can automatically install Wordpress through their user-control interface, it is one of several web software packages they offer free with auto installs.

The Grid Service is what I use, its $20 a month and lets you host up to 100 sites on it for that price. Its more expensive than many services, but I have had to deal with several low-cost hosting companies when doing web work for others who insisted on using cheap hosting and most of them were a hassle to deal with, technical issues, foreign support people who speak poor English and don't know what they're doing, etc.

I used to use Wordpress.org on Yahoo and found it pretty good. I've also use it on godaddy. I would think it's more a matter of price and company stability that matters.

But for me, switching to Zenfolio, with its flexibility and Lightroom integration, really brought a whole new level of ease and enjoyment to my web efforts. I'm very impressed with what they offer.

I use and am happy with Lunarpages, but frankly so far I have mostly been redirecting to wordpress.com because I haven't learned how to build a site yet. I have found their support to be very prompt in responding to questions.

I was about to pose the same question a few days ago and asked the question in google search, "what is the best photo web hosting site?" and one report listing the top ten said it was, Photobucket, of which I am already a member.
Now if i can find someone to whip me up a web site i would appreciate it. I already have a domain name but am unfamilair with HTML language and not to swift on how to go about it. poor, but willing to spend a few $ for help.
poll seems to point to word press??

Hold on folks, let's clarify a few things here.
Wordpress is a publishing platform which you can install anywhere, but there's also wordpress.com and .org which provide hosting for you. Other hosted solutions like squarespace, photobucket provide a service, whereas setting up your own website you need to look at hosting companies like dreamhost which is a completely different thing to do.

And yes, please, please avoid godaddy

I've been using an Amazon S3 Bucket. It took a bit of fiddling to get my domain to redirect properly, but now it's working great, and it's cheap. I got my first bill a couple of weeks ago for $0.51! It won't work for anything but a static website, though.

In addition there are other "free" website hosting services that allows you to piggyback on their domain.

So your website will look like "your-name.hostingcompany.com" Examples of these are like wix.com, webs.com etc.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I actually found a deal I couldn't pass up being offered by another member in another photography forum. Costs work out just a little more than owning the old Pro Flickr account, and cheaper than the new ad-free Flickr option and big name businesses. Been busy signing up for web hosting space, and getting my site up and running.
