From 9/9/9 New York Times:

"By WILLIAM GRIMES Published: September 8, 2009
Sylvia Schur, a food editor who through her pioneering consulting company developed products like Clamato and Cran-Apple juice and Metrecal, wrote recipes for the fictional home chefs Ann Page and Betty Crocker and helped conceive the menus for restaurants like the Four Seasons in Manhattan, died Wednesday in Chicago. She was 92....
Mrs. Schur began writing a consumer column for the newspaper P.M., where her officemate, the photographer Weegee, would test his cameras by talking flash pictures of her. She later was a food editor at Seventeen, Look, Flair and Woman’s Home Companion."

Italics are mine.

Clamato is a tomato drink, no? Anyhow, interesting someone who worked with Weegee was still alive. wow -

Clam -tomato juice.....Clamato.

"Clamato (a portmanteau of "clam" and "tomato") is a trademark of the Mott's company which denotes a drink made primarily of water, reconstituted tomato juice concentrate, and high-fructose corn syrup. It is flavored with monosodium glutamate, spices, and a small amount of clam broth."

Yech.

In the southern US one can buy a mixture of Bud Light and Clamato in a single can.

Ms. Schur, the lady who worked in the same office with Weegee, was alive recently, but given that this was her obit, she isn't anymore (he died in the day after Christmas in 1968). Must have been interesting to have Mr. Fellig exploding flashbulbs with his Speed Graphic in her direction while she was trying to write in a small office. One could do worse for roommates.

Clamato. Sounds gross,

It is! (It must be an acquired taste.)

but now I'm hooked on Bud Light Chelada beer (Bud Light mixed with Clamato.)

That sounds even worse! Totally 144!

Eeeewwww! (/me throws up!) :(

(Is that really an AB product?)

Clamato is actually pretty good stuff. I cannot attest to Bud Light Chelada. I'll leave that to one of you brave souls. Please report back.

Having given up drinking (due to acid reflux problems), I doubt I'll try the Bud Light Chelada. However, I can attest to Clamato being a good Bloody Mary base. On the topic of strange drinks I used to enjoy (perhaps this will explain the reflux problem :bang:), Fresca goes well with Campari.

Yup, it's a real AB product. I've found it here in KC though I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. I've heard reviews all over the map, so it's not at the top of my must-try beer list.

Does anyone have a picture of Arthur Fellig (aka, Weegee the Famous) quafing a Clamato or a Chelada (factory or homemade)? A nice self-portrait would be fine.

Alas, poor Fellig predeceased the commercial release of Clamato. Perhaps he
present when Ms. Schur was engaged in R&D....

Anheuser-Busch and Cadbury Schweppes Team Up on Latin-Inspired Beers ST. LOUIS (Jan. 14, 2008) – As one of the hottest new products to hit markets in California and Texas cities, followed by tremendous success in Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska, Budweiser & Clamato Chelada and Bud Light & Clamato Chelada will arrive in convenience stores, supermarkets and grocery stores nationwide today. Latinos, specifically those of Mexican descent, have been mixing beer with Clamato for decades. Budweiser & Clamato Chelada and Bud Light & Clamato Chelada honor that tradition by combining Anheuser-Busch’s classic American-style lagers with the spicy, invigorating taste of Clamato Tomato Cocktail, made by Cadbury Schweppes Americas Beverages (CSAB). Due to their tremendous test market success, adults across the country are clamoring to enjoy this convenient, great-tasting drink. “This is a recipe that combines cultures and flavors,” said Ana Vitrano, product manager, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “Budweiser, Bud Light and Clamato are all highly respected brands that, when combined, produce the authentic-tasting recipe many Latinos love. It’s la combinación perfecta!”
A savory beer, Budweiser & Clamato Chelada and Bud Light & Clamato Chelada were developed with the adult consumer in mind. Budweiser, a classic American-style lager, and Bud Light, a classic American-style light lager, are the world’s best-selling beers, and Hispanics have been enjoying the great taste of Clamato since its introduction in 1969.
An estimated 60 percent of all Clamato is purchased with the intention of using it as a mixer, so the combination of the three brands means the adult consumer can more easily enjoy a recipe they already love.

Hmmmm ... They mention Nebraska but I don't remember seeing it here, and one supermarket I go to does have quite an esoteric beer selection which I've looked over a number of times.

Still, it sounds absolutely gross!

(OMG! 3000 posts!)
