Weird one from Sony - an integrated lens/cam to be used w/ your smart device

I find it interesting. I'm not sure I'd buy it, but I'm interested in how it all pans out (if real).

I was actually thinking, that it would be a nice idea, to have a camera, that would project a live view image on something like Ipad, so that you could make a tripod combination akin to LF camera, and have the advantage of composing the image on a screen that you could look at from a certain distance. That would really help you master the framing. Ideally, the sensor should be reasonably large, to be able to achieve selective DOF if necessary.

...i already see it coming...a lot of weird people will use those kind of devices for a different purpose for what they are designed for...

it does sound interesting though, but does it also connect via the internet? this way it could be used as a security cam too.

A leaked picture - looks like maybe going to become real

How about the zoom lens unit and 1 inch sensor from the rx100 series available to use w/ your tablet or smart phone? Very interesting... An iPad mini or a kindle fire HD w/ this device hmmmm.. Not sure I would ever go for this on a smart phone though...

One day a ff sensor if this takes off? :p

Anyway u may not like the idea, but Sony is definitely pushing the envelope w/ this one.

Horseless buggy no more.
Same as modern tear drop shaped cars don't resemble buggies anymore, Sony now breaks away from the 'Barnackian' form factor. I respect them for it, but think it's also a brave (as in risky) move; we'll have to see how it pans out.

You had a rough idea (Sony's execution and usage scenario is far from what you proposed), but one user (sevo) in that thread nailed it 100%.

You misunderstood me.
I have no desire to use my phone as a camera.

I want a real camera, the similarity between my post and Sony's implementation stops at the fact that the phone is used for preview.

No, I didn't misunderstand you.

I just pointed out that sevo described EXACTLY how it will be done, IF there is a lens/sensor-sans-lcd camera.

I'm perfectly able to understand that you proposed/wanted a different camera. So, sadly, the answer to your question in that thread is still "never". But maybe this is just a first step and "your" camera will happen at some point.

Let's see what it brings. I can imagine many interesting ways to use, and diverse amusing situations too.

IMO, attached with a smartphone it seems like a VF camera with the integrated camera module... Let's wait for some hipster to release a VF app that just uses the integrated camera app, heh.

I believe Ricoh once had plans similar to this for the GXR, where you could remote operate your camerai unit.

I want to stick the camera onto my hat and control it with the iphone.

No more Point and Shoot.

Now it will be Look and Click !

Sounds like a plan.
Me? I'd attach one to a headband and wear it around like a miner's light.
Camera? What camera? (lol)
