Welcome Back to RFF!

Stephen, thanks for all the effort in getting RFF up and running once again!

. . . . . it is quite apparent that many enjoy and missed the availability to access the site as part of our daily routine!

VERY glad that RFF is back up; thanks to Stephen for the hard work, and to Josh Root for the temporary hosting on photo.net.
Very nice thing for him to do...

Boy this has been a tough time - withdrawal symptoms and all; glad things are back to normal. I love this site. Great work Stephen!

Thanksgiving morning about 6 AM West Coast time I became aware RFF was down. Reasonably the site should have been back up in 2 to 4 hours max. Other than a brief 6 to 9 hour window Friday night, RFF is finally back only 7 days later.

RFF is hosted on a dedicated server with RAID backup by a large company which hosts thousands of servers, a company that promises expert tech support 24/7 365.

The frustration of the situation has been beyond words.

Welcome Back!

Stephen

If your server was the only one with problems, you are rightfully upset, but for you to expect 2-4 hours recovery (or even 7 days recovery in a disaster situation) you would really have to pay serious money.

Woohoooo we're back. I was trying to access maybe more than 10x a day to no avail. Wondered what happened until I saw the post in DPI. Thanks Head bartender.

+1 to Steve M. This has been annoying, but little else.

I'm more surprised by all those "I saw it up and running and went directly to classifieds" posts. Looks like most people here missed RFF as they'd miss evil bay... Not promising, IMHO...

Did not think I would miss it!

Of course I had some things to post in the classifieds on thanksgiving :)

I dont know any of the details but it is hard to believe it would take 7 days to get a site back up. This made me rethink my web hosting on my business site.

Glad you are back

it was like missing that evening conversation, over a drink and cigar, with good friends...

Yes, that expresses it very well. And thanks to Stephen (and the whole team) for getting us back up.

Would it be possible for us to know the reason we went down? Was the hosting provider negligent in some way, or was it something that could happen anywhere? Would we be better off to go back to the former host, or is it best to stay here?

thank god the Classifieds are back !! j/k

was a long week I tell ya. I imagine the tech issues will be given some serious thought over the next little while but good to have everything back up and running with no data loss !

This was upsetting to some.
It was clearly frustrating for Stephen and, likely, most if not all the moderators.

What I found interesting in the time that RFF was down and out was how many people actually "depended" on this site. That is, how people seemed to feel a "loss" over it. On a smaller scale, this speaks to how closely knit the folks are here at RFF. On a larger scale, it speaks to how the entire concept of online communities has evolved and changed our view of what is, perhaps, important to us.

It was very interesting to observe. I wonder what would have happened had it gone away altogether. I'm sure we would have adapted but I also know, personally, that you do feel a sense of loss; whether it be large or small.

Glad it's back though :)

Cheers,
Dave

Thank you for getting things back in order. Sorry that it probably cost you some valuable time and perhaps a few grey hairs.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder
