Well, it looks like they know how to shoot to me.

The more activities are shown at RFF, the better the chances are that it is a step forward.

Wow, we are off to a good start with this new section...

Why are you guys always disparaging other people's work? Just because you like an image to be a certain way doesn't mean that everyone else needs to conform to those same attributes.

Though I do not feel I said something 'Disparaging'
I do think its A Grand Thing to 'Raise the Bar ' and push for something to 'Aspire 'to ... ;)

Hear hear!

What would you do if you went somewhere new, and the first thing an established member did was to disparage your work because it wasn't done the way they did theirs?

As long as people aren't mean, I don't think it is bad to have differences of opinion. I see many photos here on RFF that others rave about, and don't really impress me. I also see photos that don't seem to catch anybody's attention, and I just sit and stare enraptured.

There are many classes of photographs. We don't all like them all. As to the photos above, I really like some, and some don't really grab me. That's just normal to me.

Exactly, oftheherd. It's OK to be different, we can't all agree, I just get very hot under the collar about anyone who believes in "one true way" and disparages everything else.

yes, I know, if that annoys me, why am I here? :p

Well I certainly wouldn't mind being Hot Under The Collar
In these sub zero temperatures ,

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. To begin with, I don't like this digital look.

Let me be as honest here as you :)

I finds those pictures interesting:

Rare case, I can't tell if it is digital or on film. :D
I looked at those pictures several times and every time it was pleasant.
Some of them are more on the painting side in terms of quality, light and some other things which makes presented photography special and admirable.

Thanks one more time to Stephen for keeping RFF traditions and finding respectable people!

Exactly...especially one hand picked by the owner of the site.

I don't think there was gratuitous dismissal of the work (yet), that said if you arrive somewhere new and expect nothing but approval you're in for disappointment.

In fact I think it's a good sign, feels like dealing with real people when there's dissenting views and different characters, not just nicknames on the internet

I find his photos very interesting.
Based on the photos posted here, I feel he focuses more on capturing "light" than "emotions" or "the moment", the traditional mantra of street photography.
Looking forward to hear what he has to say..

I'm more interested in what he brings in terms of conversation, topics and ideas than whether I personally find his photographs to marry with my idea of what is and isn't, either, street or simply 'good.'

I'd also suggest bringing in an outsider (terrible term that makes RFF seem very insular) may be a very good thing, especially considering the strong opinions on what actually makes something a street shot or not - if we can't come to a consensus on that I doubt very much we'll ever all agree on what or who is good and best placed to take on the role of a mentor in such a forum.

only 15 posts until disparagement. could have at least waited until the second page ... :)

You realize this is the way of things to come in the new street forum, 15 posts into any thread and we'll have disparaging comments, volatile disagreements and plenty from those that are always correct ;)

Ditto. Most of the "street" photography that is deemed to be "street" by the "street" curating maf...err...tight circles...is a highly-distilled set of gesticulating individuals glorified under a bath of Flashlight-as-instrument-of-a-Deity's-fleeting-recognition-of-their-existence. Very wham-bam (and yet they say no thank you ma'am).

I tend to dismiss institutionalized genres over the more subtle touches of intimacy and humanity as represented by Stephen's picks in the OP -- and since this is the intertoobes, where reading is overrated, I'll just summarize my sentiments thusly: yay!! seems like a good start. :)

I'm thrilled to see a new forum that is defined by a genre of images.

Not that there is any lack of images here, but the majority of forums are organized by gear. This new one, classified by imagery rather than gear, can't but be a good thing.

I think maybe people are forgetting that they're going to be a "mentor" on the forum and not "the world's best street photographer".

I can't imagine anybody here has taken photography classes with a teacher who is the world's most interesting photographer. It looks like they know what they're doing and should have some interesting things to say about the art.
