Dear Tom:

I have an M6 form the Wetzlar, (I hope I spelled that correctly?), ser. #1666XXX. I have noticed that it does not have the "protective covers" on the sides of the body for when you may put on a strap.

I have another M6 from SOLMS that does have them. Could it be possible that my WETZLAR M6 is a fake? I mean, I bought it from a VERY, VERY REPUTABLE dealer & repair person here in the US. This person comes HIGHLY recommended. This camera has been "upgraded" with the "MP" finder & gear train with a complete overhaul & CLA.

I have asked this person about it & the person told me that is quite normal based on the year it was produced before the move to SOLMS.

Any thoughts?

Best,

Don Michael Brown

Early production M6 cameras (like yours) did not have the plastic strap protectors - these "bumpers" came very early in M6 production, but the very first cameras did not have them.

Be assured your camera is no fake.

No knowledge of whether mine is "as original" or not, but it's stamped "Wetzlar" and has the bumpers above the strap lugs, but a higher serial number than yours. S/N 1688xxx

Just offering a data point.

My earlier M6's did not have the rubber bumpers and ZI think that they did not come into play until about 1.700 000. Leica would put them on for you on earlier models if you asked. To fake a Wetzlar M6 would be useless - they really don't bring a premium price.
The "Solms" marking was used for the first time on the LHSA M6 TTL - and now when the production moves back to Wetzlar in a year or two - could be a bit of rare version.

I have a Wetzler M6 with bumpers and a serial number of 168xxx.
My partner has one without bumpers and a serial number of 1657xxx.
Both have Leitz red dots.
I also have a Solms version but prefer the engraved top plate of the Wetzler versions.
Anyway, the M6 is a great camera and it sounds like you have a good one.
Have fun with it!
