What 35mm?

I dont think you need to spend six months to determine whether you need other FLs. For someone with a 50, the 35 is a very sensible second lens. Assuming the poster does actually want a 35, I would say the list of options is endless and the time shoudl be spent thinking about the look required. Seeing as the 50 cron is the current lens (I assume a modern one) quite a few lenses will mesh with that:

ZM Biogon 2/2.8
UC Hexanon/regular Hexanon
36 asph/V4/new summarit etc
CV Skopar or Pancake

I dont think there is an answer here, but totally disagree with the notion that you are not serious if you choose a CV. Does that mean you are only partly serious if you choose a Japan manufactured Zeiss rather than Leica?

Try and get your hands on some and see what handling you like- they are quite different and this will make a difference unless yu do everytihng very slowly.

Then there is speed. If you do not find yourself needing speed, seriously consider the 2.8 biogon, summarit 2.5 and CV 2.5.

Then there are filters. The Summarit and CV have the same filter size. For travellers carrying kit this once again matters more than those who dont might think.

Personally, and very personally, my shortlist would be:

Expensive - Summarit 2.5 - same 39mm filters. Also Leica. if you can live with 2.5.
Less expensive - Zeiss 2/2.8 depending on size/speed requirements.
CK Skopar/pancake if you want tiny and might not use this FL as your main one. Again, f2.5, so good as long as you dont need the speed.

Another 2c: I have seen some ridiclous bashing of the CV optical quality as well as bokeh. I see no problem with either unless you are a fetishist.

instead of the 35/2.5 pii, i recommend the 35/1.4 nokton classic. you'll get a much better idea of how fast the lens you upgrade to should be.

Alright I think I have decided to wait and get another leica lens! It has really been more about my impatience to get another lens than amount of money to spend. I want to make sure I am looking for the right size. I live in Alabama but I do travel some with work so there is some scenic stuff (my reason for wanting to get a wider lens) and street photos would be my main photography. I hate shooting anything indoors! I love playing with Depth of field and motion. I just noticed on here alot of people use a 50mm and a 35mm. I can come up with $1000 and maybe a little more! I am thinking about the Summicron-M 35mm f/2 or a 28mm I am not sure what would be best for my shooting. I do like the idea of having the same filters for both. I dont like the idea of only using a 50mm I am new to range finders but not new to photography I came from Nikon stuff with multiable zooms and primes. Most of my photos were between 20mm-60mm.You guys are alot of help! Thanks

Also I will be shooting mostly B&W film that I am learning to develop myself... That is how I got here by the way. I have a friend here in Birmingham that first started to develop his on film at age 12 late at night while his parents were asleep and he just turned 75!!! He taught photography at two local colleges for 35yrs. I was at his house learning to develop and enlarge and when the first page hit the first tray of liquid and started to turn B&W I knew I would be selling all my Nikon Digital gear right away! So here I am...

Welcome, Shay - and while I no longer have the time or patience for the photo darkroom, I remember fondly pulling my first roll of Tri-X out of the Patterson tank, amazed that there were actually images there! Then I started visiting the Spirotone store in NYC to pick up an enlarger, trays, chemicals and even a quick-results-item, a stabilization processor! I stayed in the closet/darkroom for hour upon hour until my wife demanded that I "come out of the closet!" 😉 So I did, and she happily remained my bride all these many decades. She would not like me getting back into what I used to call wetwork, but which now has a rather different meaning, as I read in Tom Clancey novels.

But stick with it. It's the most fun you can have with your pants on.

BTW - I didn't address your initial question -- As for 35mm lenses - my favorite focal length, I have many and they are all excellent. The Color Skopar, the Ultron, a Canon 35/2.0 (I think the best of the lot for BW work) and Serenar (Canon) 35/2.8. They are all good with different strengths. No need to be a Leica snob, the other lenses are good, as well. You decide.

Almost did it

Almost did it

I am neither going to try to convince you to wait and learn how to use you camera better or pontificate on the value equation of a Leica lens. I will simply tell you that if I were in your position, and I was at one time, I would strongly encourage you to get the 3rd version Leica Summicron 35/2. Relatively reasonable price (for a Leica, $7-800 +/-) and an excellent performing and handling lens.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Been there. Almost did it. Twice. The same lens. 😱

Coulda. Shoulda. Woulda.

I hesitated twice on the same lens for sale here. Both times someone else beat me to the lens. No worries. Everything turned out fine. Later I was offered a Konica 35mm UC-Hexanon in new condition for less than the v.3 Summicron. I didn't hesitate. No regrets.

Nobody can tell you what lens you will like. Buy carefully. Use a lens. If you don't like it, sell it and try another one. If you buy quality and don't overpay, you can recover your money and try another lens. When you find the right one, keep it.
