What 5L container for mixing XTOL?

Easy! I always buy 5 L plastic canisters with distilled water (some €2) and use them for mixing and storing. Same for fixer.

Ha! I knew there was a reason some chemicals came in 5L amounts!

Unfortunately in the US you can really only find water in small 500mL bottles, 1 gallon jugs, or large dispensing jugs that are 2.5 gallons or more. The dispensing jug is what I previously used, but the ridges on the bottom were annoying for stirring in the particles.

I just use a generic white bucket I bought at the local hardware store. It happens to have liter markings on it, but if it didn't, adding the 5 liter mark with a sharpie is no big deal. I decant into 5 one-liter amber glass bottles. I just tossed some that was almost a year old and it was still working fine...

I use the 1L boston round amber bottles as well to store. I'd check around locally to find these as shipping can get expensive. If you're in Southern California check out General Bottle Company in Downtown LA to reduce shipping costs. Head over to Freestyle while you're at it and treat yourself to film and paper.

I just use a very clean paint bucket to mix my xtol or d76.

Whoa! Those are cheap! $2.08 a piece?

Yes, but the shipping is pretty steep as I recall, simply because they are glass and require good packing. Order a dozen -- even after shipping it is a good deal and they will last forever. With a dozen, you'll have a few spares 🙂.

For mixing I use a bucket of appropriate size. I wear nitrile rubber gloves and simply open the package under water by cutting it in half with a pair of scissors. I know this is not the way it is shown in the instructions (slowly add while stirring ...), but it works. This way there is no chance that any of the powder becomes airborne and at the same time it facilitates to completely empty the packs.
For storage I use a 5L wine bladder and think it's the safest and most convenient way to store Xtol.

I make 2.5L solution from it so have 'double concentrate' which is easier to store and apparently have longer shelf life. When you want to process it as 1:1 dilution add 3 parts of water to 1 part of concentrate

Mauros, this is intriguing. Do you find that you have to heat the water like with D76 in order to dissolve the powder?

Two gallon pail, plastic. After mixing, decant to 5 single liter glass bottles, dark ones or store in dark.

Since you will not have exactly 5 L, fill the glass bottles evenly, then add water to top off.
