What about Efke 25 ISO?

I just oredered some rolls of Efke 25 film.
I plan to process it in R09 (I'm looking for a classical look, good tonality and grain doesn't really matter). wide open shots at nearly all lighting conditions 😉

any other developers you'd recommend matching my criteria?

I've been shooting Efke 25, processed in Rodinal, wide-open or nearly so, for several years now. Great stuff with a unique look. Just beware that Efke 25 can be very contrasty in direct sunlight. For that reason, I try to shoot this film on cloudy days or with the subject in a shadow. A lot of shots in my gallery are on Efke 25.

thanks a lot for your fast reply. as far as I know it's a very traditional emulsion with lots of silver, maybe this combination makes it contrasty in direct sunlight. 🙂

I have not shot KB25 but have shot a lot of KB50 and noticed this same result - VERY contrasty in direct sunlight. I have developed in D76, Xtol, Ilfosol S and DDX and the "classic look" seems to come through in each.

It's contrasty alright, be careful when developing. It also has a reduced sensitivity in the upper spectrum, with very low red sensitivity. It can be used creatively in portraits but you should be aware of the slightly odd results with pale skin and dark lips. Don't use a red or dark orange filter, the light sensitivity will drop significantly more than the filter factor.

ID-11 seems to control the contrast of the efke 25 in the sun. Beautiful stuff.

I shoot this a lot under the ADOX brand (same film cut from the same mother-rolls - just different labels). I find that Tetenal Neofin Blue helps bring out the shadow detail while retaining, and even helping, the distinctive look of the film. It's lovely stuff if you've got the light for it.

you should also get efke 50. it is really beautiful film, i use it a lot. it has very nice tones and contrast.

I recently bought some Efke 25 to play around with in 120 format. I shot both overcast and contrasty light and got good results with D76 1:1. The film box recommends D76 straight for 5 mins at 68 degrees F; I don't like such short development times and found someone on APUG who recommended D76 1:1 for 8 minutes at 68 F. Worked great - I will be using it again for sure.

I've heard the stories too, but I've yet to have any problems. That includes buying individual 36 exp rolls as well as a few 30 meter bulk rolls. So far, so good.

That's a coincidence! I also ordered a first 10 rolls a couple of weeks ago, and the first is now loaded on my Canon IIIA with jupiter 8... Development will be with Rodinal. I'm exposing for ISO50.

Just checked the massive development chart for efke25/Rodinal, and it doesn't mention ISO50. It does mention ISO12, which is strange, since the film is documented to no allow for over-exposure at all...

For efke25@ISO50 I'd go for something like Rodinal 1+50 8' normal agitation... Does that sound reasonable?

Why not use the Real Rodinal?

I have a bunch of Efke 25 in 120. As soon as I find my 'Round-Tuit, I'll load The Beast (a.k.a. Pentax 6x7) and spalsh the Efke 25 in D-76 1:1. Based on those results, I may head for D-76 1:3 or Microdol-X 1:3.

I just had a roll of the 50 with some blank spots- small round, like air bubbles in the emulsion? Two spots near the start of the roll. None of the other films in the tank were affected, so it must have been that roll. I've never had air-bells with my tanks and agitation. I had the same thing happen on a roll of the Adox branded 25 a long time ago, also in 35mm, that time just one little spot.

Wayne- I really love the highlights of the 25 in ID-11 1:1- detail just goes on forever it seems.

I can't say I've had any issues with QC at all with the ADOX branded stuff - maybe the new German owners have tightened it up.

Is ID-11 Ilford's version of D-76? I have an abdundance of D-76. It's pretty much all I've ever used. I do aspire to Xtol + Rodinal. First I have to use up my 10 gallon packs of D-76. 😎 😀 And 2 quart packs of Microdol-X. 😀 😎 And 2 gallon packs of D-19. 😱 😀 😎

Rodinal 1+100 for 10 minutes (A09 1+80) is great

Use it for most things that do not moove too fast, flowers, rocks, waterfalls, sleeping children, etc.
