What are the most compact teles for Leica?

In M mount...Leica...90mm tele-elmarit thin version is probably the smallest. The Summicron is the largest and heaviest. The elmarit the sharpest. I don't know about the newer-asph or summarit lenses.

The old Elmar 90 in various versions is also quite small. I borrowed a 1936 Elmar 90/4 a couple of years ago. It was about the same size as the Canon 100, perhaps a little narrower and a tiny bit longer by comparison. Beautiful (uncoated) glass, producing less contrasty images as one might expect and colors w/ more pastel hues. If that's a look you're after, then that's a lens worth looking for, although finding one w/ glass in great condition may be a challenge.

Steve,
I echo your suggestion. I have a 90/4 Elmar from the 40's that has very clean optics. I asked Brian to optimize it for me, and it is now an excellent lens.

Without their hoods, my 75mm CV is about 1/2 inch shorter than my 90mm thin tele-Elmar. It is only about 3/8 inch longer than my 50mm pre-ASPH Summilux.

Hope that helps!

I know the Canon 100mm/3.5 LTM to be very short.

How does it's size compare to the Nikkor versions? I have a black one in S mount which I thought was pretty small, and a chrome LTM version which is a little bigger and heavier.

I'm thinking the same thing in regards to the 90. The Ver I Summicron I bought is huge and heavy--I use it on my D700 more than on my M3 😎

I have not seen any Nikkor 100mm 3.5. The 105mm 2.5 is heavy and large.

It is my favorite tele lens.

The new Leica 90/4 macro is certainly very small when collapsed. Extended its a hair shorter than the 75 and 90 Summarits, which are also quite small. I don't know about some of the older lenses...
