What are the worst words in photography?

One I heard three times just today: "When are they going to be replacing the ___________?"

(Best answer: 10:31am, October 17, 2012.)

Funny thread. Here are a few of my favourites...

“The lens has light cleaning marks..." - Recent 'bay purchase, which could have been more accurately described as "cleaned with a hard metal brush".

“How does it focus?" - About the M6.

“What are you doing?" - While I'm standing next to a tripod with a camera mounted on it. Well...

“Is it old?" - About Epson RD-1.

"Can you still buy film for that?" - Any film camera.

"I still think they look better in colour." - Girlfriend about my Ansel Adams-wannabe B&W nature shots.

"Smile!" - When somebody is taking pictures of me.

"I need that camera!" - Me talking to myself.

"What kind of pictures do you take?"

"Why are you taking pictures now?" - At night with tripod.

"Why are you taking my picture?" - Aggressive jerk who happened to pass by as I scanned the street scene in the VF, not taking pictures. His GF: "You can't take people's pictures without permission!". Uhhh... yes I can.

"i am not going out with it much because i haven't bought a protection filter for the lens" - referring to a canon rebel with the kit lens

A lot of these are people just not knowing. Not that it's any less aggrivating because of that. I love the "What are you doing?" And the last two one is just stupid.

My favorite is when I have an SLR and a bazooka-lens, I get asked if I'm taking "Spy pictures." I reply, "If I was really spying, you wouldn't know I was here."

Oh, I forgot to mention the dead silence that follows whenever I've asked a magazine, "So, how much are you gonna pay me for the photos I took for the article I just wrote?"
Non-words, actually. Annoying nonetheless.

"This is a restricted area. I could fine you for this." - Cop who caught me trespassing in a NYC subway station.
Me, without thinking too much: "Yeah, but why would you?"
He paused for a second - I believe he was actually wondering "hmmm.... why?" for a brief moment. After seeing my Danish credit card as proof of ID and shaking his head, he waved me away. Lucky me.

Comments on gallery images:-

"nice tones" (and????)
"like the composition" (So?)
"this works for me" (Why?)
"This works on many levels" (So tell me what you mean)
"Nice bokeh on that lens"(What about the image?)
"I'd crop.." (Not your image)
"What settings did you use?"
"What camera did you use"

And one that I have been guilty of myself
"The first roll of film through my new -----."

Personal irritants are - Polls, developed semi-stand and BOKEH.

Regards,
John

Then don't ask for input :D.

"conus only"
What I find annoying is people saying "Will you include shipping to Canada?" on a $75 camera. Shipping to California is $10. Shipping the 6 hour drive to Toronto (counting the Peace Bridge wait) is $40. If you expect me to ship to a foreign country, don't get ticked off when I say I want some more to cover the shipping costs... That's why I put CONUS only in every ad I place. I'm not xenophobic, it's just too expensive and a PITA. Make it worth my while, and I would change my mind. :)

My other annoying words include "Bokeh," "Strobist," "The Decisive Moment," "Street Photography" and "Photog." All are far too overused and obnoxious.

Also annoying are the people who expect more money for a beat-up, hazy and de-chroming collapsible Elmar 50/3.5 than for a LTM Summicron...

Fine Art Photographer

Anybody who claims to be a "fine art photographer" is, by definition, not one.

Artist/photographer.

You're not (unless youalso paint).

That's rubbish and I'm really upset that people think the same thing as you do. Not all photography is done for artistic purposes, however much of the photography in the world is.

A painter is an artist, so is a sculptor, so are the people who put urinals in the middle of galleries. Art doesn't have a set definition of what is. Why on earth do you believe that photography cannot be part of the art world?
