My brother and I were messaging back and forth while we were watching The Masters from opposite sides of the state this past weekend. He sent me the picture I attached.

Any idea what that monstrosity is? Maybe some kind of weather sealing for a DSLR? I tried to assure my brother that size, does not in fact, mean everything...

looks like sound blimp on a ????

could either a AquaTech Scout D800 Sound Blimp or
AquaTech Sound Blimp Shadow 1D for Canon 1DX

The people up front appear to be smaller than those at the rear. If there aren't three foot high midgets seated in the front three rows, it is inept compositing/photoshopping.

It does seem he took the picture from a strange angle I agree - but I can guarantee he has absolutely no idea what compositing even means, and the last time he used photoshop (if he ever has) was probably V1 to make a birthday card or something.

I guess it could be just the strange angle that made the camera look that size though.

should have bought a 6d for its silent mode instead of that sound blimp... at least weights less, looks better and is easier to operate ...

Ahhh, thanks for the clarification - I have never heard of a Sound Blimp before. Interesting and kinda crazy! I'm sure glad I don't need one of those for my M2...

It looks like the latest offering from Canikon that runs on vacuum tubes, for retro style photos that look like they were taken on film.

That's crazy, never even heard of a "sound blimp." Makes sense given the setting. But why not buy a quiet camera to begin with, rather than try to quiet a noisy camera?

In addition, the photographer appears to be in the gallery. A pro would likely be in front of the gallery. Also, pro photographers don't need a sound blimp as they know to wait until the club head contacts the ball before pushing the shutter button. This prevents them from distracting the player.

The only people in the gallery who take photos are those with cell phones (only recently allowed) and often they don't bother to put the phone's camera in silent mode. That is against the rules.

Seems like a weird composite.

HE would not need to - he obviously photographed a TV screen (unless you prefer to assume that your photoshop-unaware brother composited in a TV caption and monitor frame parts).

That odd distortion or composite already happened at the TV camera (or edit suite). My guess is that it is a postprocessed extreme close-up from some boom attached audience camera with a 180° fisheye lens, and all proportions are messed up by combination of the fisheye, distortion compensating software and virtual panning. That camera may be any consumer DSLR, just like the guy holding it probably is no circus freak...
