Just curious what everyone is using for a case for their R-D1. I really like the leather form fitting cases that are available via Leica Time but they are very pricey. I would like to find something similar that has a cut out for the LCD screen and provides some protection for the camera.
I even thought about purchasing a Voigtlander Bessa R3 case and modifying it myself. But, the R-D1 dimensions are just a bit larger so that was unsucessful.
So...what are you using with their R-D1?

I'm not using anything. But if I had any money I would go for a Luigi case. He's also a sponsor of RFF, so what's keeping you.

His cases look great, and I'm sure they are worth what they cost. But I'm quite happy to keep my camera in an inexpensive, but protective case - the camera is precious, and I want the case to take the beating. I don't want a precious case as well, which then needs to be protected from a beating

IIRC, Epson has released a case for the R-D1 when they announced the R-D1s.

Hi Dale, I am usually avoiding to post any my message related to my cases... But, you wrote "pricey" ? Perhaps that you don't know that, along with my hand stistched case for R-D1, I am also offering a less costly, special case that cost, WITH THE ACCORDING DELUXE STRAP, US$ 190, only ! The $-Eur conversion is unfavorable for me, and $ 190 are equivalent to Eur 150, or even less. The case is provided with a removable rear patch, that covers and protect the LCD screen whan it is not necessary to see it. The strap, alone, would cost $ 58 ! I try to post a picture of it. Let me say that I am making any possible efforts in order to keep my prices in the acceptable level, but many hours of a fine handcraft man are costly, as well the fine leather that I am using for my cases !
My congratulations for the R-D1, a camera that I like a lot. Ciao, Luigi

Luigi,
Thank you very much for reply to my post. In fact, I was basing my opinion on the price by doing the conversion from euros to to dollars at the current exchange rate which led me to believe your cases were much higher priced.
I appreciate you passing the details of the special you are running on the pricing. Your cases and craftmanship are certainly very highly regarded by your customers. I am strongly considering purchasing one!
Regards, Dale

Lutz,
Do you get frustrated at all with having to remove the bottom case to swap your memory cards? That's the only other item holding me back from getting a Luigi case at this point.

What's a case?
Never seen the point, if I'm travelling they are In Billingham if not they are over my shoulder [if wet under my coat/jacket].
In UK parlance this type of case is known as an ERC "Ever Ready Case", changed by many to a "Never Ready Case"

Dale, this doesn't bother me muchly. I use 1GB-cards (ca. 100 RAW-pics or 330 jpg-fine-pics).Dale Cook said:Lutz,

Leather Eveready Case for R-D1 and R-D1S
Leather Eveready Case for R-D1 and R-D1S
I just purchased from Japan the new Epson leather case for the R-D1 or R-D1S that I would probably sell., as I just don't use cases (rather scuff up the camera than be hampered by case). If you are interested in getting an eveready case for your camera, this is an extremely well made leather case (and it smells good). Let me know of your interest to my email address edlaurpic@gmail.com and I will send you some jpeg photos and we can talk.

Ed,
could you post pics anyway for all of us interested? I haven't seen these cases before and I'm wondering what they look like.
BTW, since you only have one case (which will be gone soon, I reckon), how much does Epson sell them for and where can we order them?

RML, here is the pic, but seemingly this case doesn't fit my R-D1 with attached ZM-lens and hood.RML said:Ed,

Here are some photos. I would like to get $350 net of paypal and shipping costs, for which I will want to be reimbursed. I am in the U.S. It is new, unused, with the snap flap that allows access to the SD card without having to remove the camera from the case. I would prefer to sell it to one of you than to list on ebay.

Please email me at edlaurpic@gmail.com if you are interested.

Regarding price, I have not been able to get a separate price for the case from Epson or anyone else, as I purchased it as part of a package of Epson and Cosina items. I am basing my price on the price Luigi charges for his beautiful Italian-made cases, even though this case is made in Japan, as the additional feature of being able to insert and remove the SC card without removing the camera from the case seems worth it. If anyone else can find a price for which these cases sell in Japan, I would like to know. Of course the EMS shipping would increase the price for which a case could be optained outside of Japan. I have emailed a Japanese dealer again today to see if I can get a price, but I have not received a reply. This is the third time I have tried to obtain a price. Anyway, the first $350 takes it.

FYI - Dirk Rosler's Megaperls site is now selling the Epson RD1SC1 case for $156 and it costs $11 for EMS shipping to the USA.

I beg your pardon, but I MUST add that...
1. It is almost totally copied from a my former case (September 2005), as from
enclosed pictures
2. The lateral slot/opening for the SD card removal is totally not necessary, with the lowered cost of the 1DB cards (MANY pictures), and the easy, 5 seconds
removal of the R-D1 camera from my cases.
3. The Epson case is NOT, I repeat, NOT hand stitched, what makes a case costly
I hope to don't seem a "spamming seller", but I thought it necessary to explain...
Greetings to all RFF members, ciao, Luigi

Owning a Luigi's case for my RD-1 I can only confirm that I haven't seen a camera case of comparable quality anywhere else for any camera.
Shame I can't afford another one for my M4-P
