What causes washed out color?

Several times I've encountered this result using my Nikon F2as and various Nikon AI-s lenses using Fuji color 100 film. The problem comes and goes w/o any apparent reason (to me):

They look under exposed to me. Check the density of the negative. You don't say how these. Where scanned, your problem could be there.

Maybe it IS the meter on the F2as. I've had the problem before w/ other people scanning at different times.

Yes, they look under exposed. just step out side with the camera and see how the suggested exposure compares with the sunny 16 rule.

Underexposure (or "non-standard" exposure) combined with a savage auto-correction by the scanner.

They could also have been improperly scanned. Hard to tell without seeing the negatives themselves.
