Those are amazing photos. But what has not changed for me is we still struggle with tonality in color and B&W. Some of the old (very old) photos amaze me how good they were. Some of it was contact printing negatives before enlargers and even after. A friend gave me some snapshots (1930-1940) of his family taken with a cheap camera. These were contact printed at the drug store, and were really good.
Hard to do exposure, but still shadow detail. He didn't know who took this:
