I'm using a Mac now. I complained so much my wife bought me an iMac for Xmas. The rest of the household uses XP machines. I had so many problems with my wife's Windows machine I finally got around to making Vista install properly. It looks pretty nice. I think my kids computer would benefit by having Vista, but we'd first have to back up files, photos, iPod stuff.....I get a headache just thinking about it.

To me the Mac doesn't seem that much easier to use...but then it doesn't seem to crash. It could be because it's somewhat new and hasn't had time to pick up as much junk.

And to be completely fair, some of the Windows machines came to us crippled with all that preloaded HP/compaq software

I built my own PC from parts I bought. Running windows XP. Used to own Macs, but they run the show. I think I feel more in control now.

PS I just hit a thousand posts!!!! Wahoo.

I'm using an aging windows machine, but will probably be buying a macbook in the next few months for school.
Say, what can I expect?
I helped a friend buy a mac recently, an older fellow buying his first computer. It was sure easy to get it working for him, but I wouldn't say it has run flawlessly. We've had trouble with Safari just up and shutting down, also Safari failing to show links. Were it mine I think I'd run Firefox instead, but maybe I'm missing something.
On one occasion the computer flatly locked up, after loading software from Konica Minolta for a scanner. Getting rid of the software seems to have solved the problem, but that experience shook the Mac's bulletproof reputation for me.
I ask as an engineering student- will I have to run the thing on windows to get software to work in the future? I don't even know what sort of software I'll end up needing yet, but I need a laptop now and would like for it to serve my needs for at least a couple of years...

I ran Linux (from 0.99 pl something) on self-built Intel boxes for over 10 years.

I've done my stint, checking chipsets on PCI cards, modifying system calls, compiling kernels, reading-the-source, configuring window managers, compiling X from source and all the rest.

Then I got a Mac cube too, connected a Digital Ixus, and was somewhat surprised to see it startup iPhoto, download the pictures and display them nicely. I hadn't even touched the mouse.

So now I use the Mac for everything. Linux used to be a hobby, in and of itself. Now I do photography.

Bryce, you can run pretty much all Unix engineering software (X11) and install MS windows as well, if you need too.

Even more interesting: How does the "I need total control attitude" go with the Apple. "we will take care of that for you philisophy"

It's a helluva lot better than "we'll screw up and let you take care of it." :D

A pleasant surprise to see so many of us on Macs!

10.3.9 here, with the Pro LCD Shape Shifter theme as a skin. Love it.

I use the laptop my employee gives me, and its always a Dell running XP, perhaps Vista soon.

to home, I plan buy next iMac that is due to launch this Autumn (the little birds that know everything, told me).

Mac OSX, which is Unix, really, no?

:)
Well, sort of. Mac OS is a program that runs on top of a BSD Unix base. But really Unix? Try running the Terminal application, and see how far you get!

SuSE 10.2 64-bit on a homebrew Athlon 64 machine. (NVidia chipset, NVidia 6200 graphics card.) Browsing with Firefox. I use Vuescan to run a Nikon LS-2000 35mm film scanner and edit the results in The GIMP. A Pentium-something box with WinXP has the Epson Perfection 4990 connected to it for MF scanning. I could run that off of Vuescan too (or Silverfast, for that matter) but I like the Epson software. No Mac connected at the moment, but I do admire the OS and want to learn a little more about the superiority they are said to have in color management.
