Hi all,

I'll be getting a wartime Summitar in the next few days. I've tried to do my research and would like to preferably buy a SOOPD barndoor shade. I've also read that the screw-on shades, as opposed to the 'clip on' shades, are the ones to look for in regard to wartime vs. postwar Summitars, although the screw-ons can fit on any Summitar. But, I don't know how to distinguish a clip-on from a screw-on.

Could anyone please provide a pic of a screw-on SOOPD from the rear? I assume they look the same from the front!

Thanks,
Andre

A screw-clip SOOPD will have an obvious screw sticking out the bottom of the rear ring, it also shows from the front. A clip-on will have two pretty obvious tabs sticking out the lower left and right sides.

There are two versions of the clip-on one, one with clips with a sharp edge, for a lens with a V-groove, one with clips with a blunt edge, so a lens with a square-bottomed U-groove.

Here's a link to a screw-clamp one at kevincameras.com

Here's a link to four clip-on ones:

Here's a grove-less Summitar that "needs" the screw-clamp hood:

Here's a Summitar with the V-groove:

Kevin doesn't have any square-groove Summitars at the moment -- they are very obvious, they have a 1mm gap in the knurling. They are the latest lenses before the Summicron.

John Shriver's answer is indeed comprehensive. Some years ago I managed to get a scew-clamp version of the SOOPD for a quite reasonable price. Not from kevincameras, of course.

Don't give up hope on the SOOPD... I just scored one on Ebay for $16 plus shipping. The problem is most are set to Buy it Now at collectors prices... just keep your eye out for a no reserve, low starting bid hood and if you're lucky it won't go to high. I don't think there's a huge demand for them... just a lot of collectors hoping they'll find some rich guy trying to complete his IIIc kit so it can sit on a shelf and look pretty 🙂

Right, Kevin's prices are for the "can't wait" buyer. He also only lists the stuff in the very most primo condition on his site.

I got my screw-clamp Summitar SOOPD hood from an eBay seller in Japan for $20.29, plus $5 for shipping. It was a treat to receive, it was packed like a little treasure in elegant papers.
