What do you note on your sale prints?

I've got a exhibition coming up, my first. All the prints will be for sale. I will be numbering them but not creating editions. Simply #1, not #1 of 25.

I'd like to sign and number. Where do you sign and note the number? What type of pen or pencil? Any other notes? Do I put in my internal numbering system 2009-10-07 or whatever.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

traditionally for photos, a pencil is used on the back of the print.

Hmmmm. I sign and date prints on the back, with a sharpie in the margin where it is not coincident with the image.

Thanks guys. Just to clarify the "#1" wasn't the title of the print it was the first print. So "My Title" #1. Sounds like the back is the way to go with a soft pencil, signature, title, edition #, date optional. Just want to give people what they expect in terms of this. The prints can be unique but I'm happy to follow the standards that people who buy photography are used to.

I'm somewhat in the same boat...
I will be submitting a framed photo that will be sold at a fundraiser for the Homeless...
Do I have to sign it ? What I'm asking is...should I sign it, is that the proper thing to do or maybe a label on the back...

Another question I have regarding this print is a "Price"...I have been asked to suggest a selling price and I don't have a clue...
It's a B&W print on Ilford FB matte paper...the image measures about 9 1/2" square and will be mounted in a 14"x14" mat and frame...
It's a photograph I took during a normal excursion in downtown Los Angeles so there is no big expenses on my part other than the roll of film, chemicals, photo paper and framing...any suggestion would be appreciated...

I find it's difficult to write with a graphite pencil on the front surface of a glossy print. The back is more pencil-friendly for unmounted prints.

If you're dry-mounting to a backing mat, then it might make sense to sign and number on the mat below the print. Then the signature can be concealed or revealed by the overmat window, at the buyer's discretion.

If it isn't a numbered edition, I wouldn't number them... but that's just my style. I'd title, sign, and date in the margin... with a very fine tip sharpie. Pencil is only usable on fiber prints. If no margins... then the back or on the mat.
