What do you put on the UPS tag?

Hello everyone!

Just bought a 50mm Canon f/1.2 RF lens for the M3 from the local camera shop and I will be sending it in to John at Focal Point for a CLA. The aperature ring is extremely sticky and from searching previous posts, it's probably the old Canon lubricant that dried up. On the section of the UPS package form that asks "Contents of package", what do other members normally put in? Expensive Leica, Canon, Voigtlander lens? Imaging Device? I don't want to lie in case the package gets damaged or turns up lost.

And be sure to insure it for about $100 more than its worth. Insurance is cheap. Collecting on lost/damaged stuff is a pain - but they do pay out eventually.

And use the USPS Priority Mail. It is cheaper, faster and more reliable. Really, if you add insurance and confirmation the USPS bends over backwards to get the package "there" really fast.

Note to all in the US only.

USPS Priority Mail is actually FedEx carrier. They have a shipping partnership (with an additional parntering now with eBay, BTW).

Unfortunately for Joe's camera gift, USPS Priority only works for domestic US shipping. Damn!

I usually write camera body or camera lens, and list the replacement value. If it gets lost, I get a brand new one complements of the shipper.

I don't use UPS anymore since recieving a damaged Canon IS lens from B&H. One end of the box was caved in, about 2" shorter than normal. Actually, I don't know for sure that the lens was damaged because I refused to sign for the package. Returned it unopened. The box looked like it had fallen 15 feet onto concrete.

Alright, I have a similar question, on-topic:

For a Canon 50 f/1.2 that's nice and great; that's what I did when I sent mine to DAG via Priority Mail.

But what about a Leica M6 and a 50mm Summilux-M? USPS charges 10% of the declared value for insurance. Which would be better in that case? FedEx?

Personally I'd still use USPS as you might save on insurance with going to FedEx, it will get eaten up by the increased cost of shipping.

Thanks for all the help! That's what I love about this forum, everyone is nice and they are always ready to help out a newbie with a question. Package sent out by Priority Mail today with insurance and confirmation. Listed as photo accessories.

Or as some say, it was one of those package that was "punted" onto the truck! :bang:

UPS is notorious for this - I think some of their drivers act out their aggressions with customers packages!

If the Post Office loses the lens, you will be required to show reasonable proof of the items value. When this happened to me, I used a KEH catalog to prove the item was worth at least the insured amount. They also require a statement from the intended recipient that the item was not received, and of course the insurance receipt.

USPS Global Priority is amongst the worst services I've ever encountered, from the US to Canada. There's no co-operation between the USPS and Canada Post at that service level, so the "Express" part is simply to the border, and then it enters the regular Canada Post stream, with no expediting through the mail or Customs; and no tracking, either.

USPS Global Express is brilliant, however: fast, and fully-trackable. Ya gets what ya pays for.

Ditto. There is one exception that your package tends to be intercepted by Canada Customs via USPS Express across the border. Then it turns out no faster than any USPS Priority Mail and they cut your package open in an ugly way.

After having paid exceeded doughs, I now prefer the plain Insured USPS Air Mail. Cheap and amazingly fast under most situations.

I've never been specific. I just print "camera lens" and put down what the replacement cost will be and pay the price of insurance. 😀
