What do YOU use a pocket knife/pocket tool for?

I wish I could have one at work for cutting boxes, and maybe a multitool for various tasks like prying or cutting stuck monitor cables, but it's not allowed.

Would find a million uses for one while out doing photography, but it's illegal to carry in public; a law with a good intent that missfired tremendously.

Ken,

Been stopped, taken off a subway by plain clothed NYPD several times. Knives were never confiscated. The cops kinda liked my knives and appreciated their quality, even though one was a spring assist. Basically they told me not to have the pocket clip exposed or to carry it concealed in a bag.

Also somehow got my knife though security (x-ray machine conveyor) after being scanned by a metal detector in a City building.

I use my Opinel for what it was originally designed to do.... cut cheese.

Although I have been known to use is to scrape fallen food stuck on the front element of my Leica lens. Again, mostly cheese from Pizza's.😱

Yo mean you'd consider skinning an animal when your fingernails are dirty? Be sure to keep your unsavoury habits from the ears of the more zealous Heath and Safety at Work inspectors!

The NRA show must have been fun. Insofar as working ANY trade show is fun (I speak as one who has been going to photokina since about 1982, and has only missed two or three shows).

What do I use a knife for? Hard question, really, but I keep a knife in my bags, each of them, for a lot of things that may happen. Everything from opening boxes delivered to my door to...cutting my fishing line.

Seems that I don't need one often but when I need it, I really need it!

My father always peeled and sliced an apple for us kids. He gave us his knives to clean and filet fish from the Saturday catch. Many times, we needed to tighten a screw on something and one of his knives came in handy.

Kind of a Boy Scout thing with me, be prepared.

Many times I have had to fix the family car, the MGs and motorcycles. Way before cell phones so it was important to fix the car and get home before dark. Knives are tools for me and having been taught by a master machinist (my Dad), I always take care of my tools and everything else I have owned. Keeping a knife around was just part of life and still is. The two recent knife threads even reminded me to take out my Buck 110 folder and clean the brass, it needs it every few months.

So, it is instilled in me from birth to carry a knife or at least have it handy as the time always comes when I will need one.😎

likewise on my keyring a leatherman mini, for fishing an old remington pocket knife
 
I carry a small Swiss Army penknife in my pocket most days. (Victorinox, in case you care.) From a photography perspective, I find the blade handy for slipping D rings on strap lugs rather than hurting my fingernails. The plastic toothpick is useful for cleaning crud out of hard to reach spots on used cameras and lenses that come my way. The tweezer is good for positioning small screws for remounting.
 
knives are super useful for yard work.

trimming lead for the weed eater, digging something out of the ground, cutting a stray branch, unjamming various tools, opening bags of mulch, etc.
 
I used my multitool to kill a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

The cuticle scissors were super useful for that.

Frances, my wife, once had a pair of nail clippers confiscated at an airline check-in, as a 'dangerous weapon'.

I had a swiss army knife confiscated from me at a bus depot in Cleveland. They said they'd mail it to me, they never did. The thing is I was traveling from Wyoming and got half way across the country with it. And I was taking a bus! Who hijacks a bus with a non-locking 2" knife.
 
... I still use a Swann-Morton knife for masks and stuff, but it's best not to keep it in one's pocket, and I have a thirty year old Solingen penknife somewhere that I used to sharpen pencils in the pre-Corel and Adobe days

There are desperate men out there! And some of them are trying to justify their 'jobs' in 'security'.
