You think Leica is immune to register problems?

I know a guy who bought a like new Leica MP (s/n was very late > 397xxxx) at a shop in Tokyo and then got it checked over by Leica Japan. They told him the mount was off and it had to go back to Germany for repair. He returned the camera instead. And despite knowing the mount was off, the shop promptly put the camera back on the shelf and sold it 😱

Just thinking out loud here but have you considered that the mount to film plane distance might be incorrect? Have you tried shooting a scene at infinity with a fast lens wide open?

I did consider it, but I don't think I can do anything myself to correct the mount to film plane distance.

I did shoot an infinity scene wide open. But I don't think the test was conclusive. The error that I would notice with my best lens (Nokton VM 50/1.5) wide open at infinity would need to be pretty substantial. And since I'm dealing with front focus I obviously can't turn the lens past infinity stop to see if I get a sharper picture at infinity that way. I'll look again if I can still find M6 vs. M3 test negatives...

I'm from Slovenia (EU), and last time Mr. Van Mannen charged me aprox. 150 EUR for shipping 200g lens from Netherlands to Slovenia. No alternative shipping method possible (even if I arranged for pickup and I took full responsibility for transport).

Hmm... Thinking it must be me. I really dislike having sensible options taken away from me. I guess I'll also need to recalibrate myself to the real world out there 😀

150 Eur for shipping is obscene for a lens. I emailed with them (actually Cathy Kuiper) yesterday because my beloved 50 Summilux needs checking. I found out they're closed 2-27 December so have decided to hand in the lens in January.

I would call them before they close to be sure about shipping. If you decide their quote is unacceptable I'd be happy to help you by bringing your camera there when I give them my lens in January and then send it back to you.

There is also one in my native Sweden called Analoga Kameror (http://www.analogakameror.se, only in Swedish incredibly), which charges 1500 SEK (around 150 Eur) for CLA of an M6. For 100 SEK they can check with a collimator if focus is on the film plane and then adjust (which costs extra). I have no experience with them but I know some members here have used them.

I would never think of sending a flat back to the factory to be repaired (but it probable that some guys do).

On the web there are tons of info about calibrating and servicing your leica in a safe cheap way.

As I already said, I couldn't unscrew the rangefinder arm retaining screw to adjust the "1m" setting. I'd need a better tool to have it perfectly seated into the slot. Unfortunately, filing down the width of the tip of the angled screwdriver proved to be much more difficult than I imagined (with the tools I have at my disposal).
