What does the "X" mean in Kodak b/w film types?

Seriously, I believe it was a method to show improvement, like Ektachrome X versus Ektachrome.

X is a label people use when they cannot think of a good catchy name, camera and film manufacturers are obsessed with the "X" factor. If you where locked away in solitary confinement and you had nothing better to do with your life you could probably write a lengthy book containing all photographic products with x in their name. Alas I do not think it would be a best seller.
