What else turns us on?

Cycling. I used to race mountain bikes back before suspension (and when my younger body could take it) and now I am a fervent road cyclist. Besides my many cameras, I own 8 bikes. Spending time with my family gives me great joy as well.

...let me see, volleyball, although I have not played since kids; camping, hiking -headed to New Mexico in a couple of weeks; biking - less now with kids and reading. I also love music....all kinds of music.

Flying small airplanes. Piper Cherokees and Cessna 172s and 150s. It's so darn expensive that I could buy another FED or Zorki for every hour's work of aviation fuel I waste flying nowhere, but it's my other passion and I try to get a few hours in every month - if I'm lucky.

Well the Smithsonian is going to add my oldest programming manual to their collection. It is THE oldest computer manual; the 16th copy of 258 printed for the IBM MARK I. It is autographed by Grace Hopper, when I saw her give a talk in 1981. I always felt a bit bad that they had the computer and I had the manual for it. No wonder they weren't using it!

That Mark I operator's manual is a real artifact. Can see why the Smithsonian would want it -- and signed by Hopper to boot!

Played Star Trek and Lunar Lander on a DEC PDP-11 back in the late '70s. Learned a little about BASIC on a borrowed HP-85. Ordered a Timex Sinclair but wound up sending it back and getting a VIC-20 my first "personal computer."

Motorcycling. Been riding since my dad got me my first dirt bike when I was seven. Scotland is blessed with some truly great roads, and a few that are the stuff of nightmares; I love them all equally! I have a Yamaha XJR1300, it's something of a dinosaur but I think that's why I like it.

Years ago I had a BMW boxer and hated it. Slow, wouldn't rev, tractor gearbox, soft suspension, awful brakes and the cornering clearance was limited by the cylinders sticking out either side. I was young and a bit wild back then, and completely failed to see the good points of the BMW. One of these days I need to get myself back on a boxer just to see what I think of them now. I doubt that I'll ever like those gearboxes though...

Jim.
