What Film In Your Folder?

Considering some folders the highest SS are not that high--around 1/200th of a sec, what film do you use? My Leotax is 1/200th and the Ikonta is 1/300th. I have a bunch of Portra 400 and XP2 ( 400 ISO ) in the freezer. I'm running out of 100ISO film and was wondering about using this Portra and XP2.

What I'd like to see is how your photos turned out shooting 400ISO film at 200--not pulling in developing. I've read plenty about Portra 400 shot at 200ISO, or other variations of overexposing, but I haven't seen some good photos showing what the results are shooting lower than the box speed.

I use Illford Delta 100 or FP4 or Kodak Tmax 100. Any film with an ISO rating around 100 or 125 should be fine. I have used XP2 quite a few times and rate it at 200 or 250 and it's fine. Most of my folders have 1/500 at a top speed. - jim

Tri-X shoots well at 200. I'm sorry I don't have a sample to post.

If you're shooting in any conditions other than bright sunlight, you should be able to expose it at box speed without any issues.

100ASA is nice if you don't know what conditions you're going to be in, but if it is cloudy, or evening, or you're shooting in shade, etc. 400ASA is fine.

C-41 process films - color neg and Ilford XP-2 - manage well with overexposure but are not very tolerant of underexposure. So, with this type of 400-speed film, you will get fine results setting the film speed to 200 +/- for example, even 100. I typically used 250, and for the Fuji 800 speed I set 500 and get better color and contrast in the darker tones without blowing the highlights. 🙂 I found that underexposing - setting higher than box speed - results in muddy darker tones, often with a greenish tint. In this discussion I'm speaking of standard C-41 lab process, no pushing or pulling, which doesn't work so well with these films anyway...

In Middle Europe we often have overcast days from Fall to Spring.
Therefore I use 400 film most of the time.
As I prefer to use apertures from 8 to 22 on folders I am glad to be able to have the 400 film to allow me shutter speeds of 100 or 250.
ISO 100 film I reserve for summer time in my folders.

I editted my original post to change underexpose to overexpose.

I'd prefer to just point and shoot these two cameras and not worry much about light so I intend to just use them on a clear day sunny 16. I had great success last spring when I used my GS645s even though it had a meter and rangefinder.

I know. I've read some about the latitude of Portra 400. I'd really like to hear from someone here who uses a folder that has used Portra 400 at 200ISO or even 100ISO. Same with XP2. With no rangefinder scale focus on the Leotax is the best I can do at f/16. The Ikonta doesn't have the aperture marks for scale focus so I'll have to see if the red dots will give me acceptable focus. I did think of a ND filter--anyone know if there was one for the 32mm push on filters?

William - I'm pretty sure that XP2 works well at 200 ISO. I know it that it does with 35mm when rated this way. I live in the mostly sunny part of Texas - with a folder - I'd be forced use XP2 @ 200 ISO.

I'll second the use Tri-X @ 200 ISO and to develop accordingly, so as to prevent the highlights from blocking up on the neg.

Is no one else an Ektar 100 user ? A Pro-pack is about $28, plus sales tax at my local camera shop. I'm very happy with this film.

Sadly, I'm down to my last 3 Pro-packs of Plus-X in the freezer. When they are gone, I'll need to switch to Fuji or Ilford. It's time to move on to what's available today.

I really don't know anything about the Leotax. Nor the different series adapters as to size. I know I can use a Series 6 with my Mamiya Six, and my favorite 9x12. One I have is a push on if I don't forget to measure it tonight, I will post the size.

I use the same films in my folders that I use in everything else: FP4+, HP5+, and Ektar. As a general rule (one I violate with some regularity), I use HP5+ in the scale focus cameras in order to buy some extra focusing flexibility via smaller apertures, while the slower films are generally used in the RF-equipped cameras.

I use any film I have to hand, putting your folder on a tripod will give you more choice and it will improve your results.

All films do fine in my Retina iia, especially with the Series filters I carry with it. I normally use fp4, Kentmere 100, or Tmax 100 in the Retina, but Trix works fine too. The Retina has 1/500, but I sincerely doubt that is it's real speed anymore -- closer to 1//250, I'm guessing.

I have used both Tri-X and HP5+ at 200 ASA and Ektar 100, though not in a Folder. As C41 films I use Portra 400 and Portra 160 for folders as I prefer the less saturated colours on vintage cameras.

I shot a pack of Ektar 100 in a Fuji GS645s last spring. I still have a bunch of Portra 400 ( and a pack of 160 ) I was hoping to use in these folders. Not sure which will use what--Leotax with XP2/Ikonta Portra 400 or vise versa.

Interestingly, in my junk drawer I found a macro adapter for Canon FD lenses that is 55mm on one end and about 39mm on the other end. I bought it a while back to use as a hood but never got around to using it. Amazingly, it has threads on the inside of the 39mm side and threads onto the Ikonta lens! Thus allowing me to use a 55mm ND filter, but put on in reverse. I might look into this more. Maybe use a 2 stop ND filter so I can shoot the Portra at 400 and the camera at 1/100th sunny 16--I think that's right. The Ikonta has 1/100th and 1/300th for the higher shutter speeds. The Leotax has 1/200th s the highest shutter speeds.

Foma 100 is indeed a great choice for Folders. Foma 100 and 400 are my primary films for my Folders.
