What filter for 35mm f2.5 Classic?

Greetings,

In order to retain compactness I decided to get a 39mm screw in yellow filter for my CV LTM 35mm f2.5 lens. I was using a 39mm to Series VI adapter and hood but that defeated the purpose of having a compact camera/lens.

Anyway, the filter that came is a vintage, new old stock Walz screw in 39mm filter. Fine, I thought. Took off the CV lens hood, screwed in the filter then found that the outside diameter of the filter is too great for the hood to slip over.

Anyone else out there find a particular brand of 39mm filter that works with this lens and it's compact round hood? The hood should slip over the filter and screw into the outside threads of the barrel.

Another vote for a 39mm B+W filter, though with the following words of caution: That lens is already contrasty as hell, and while I've always used a med. yellow filter with my copy, there have been several occasions when I wish I hadn't.

I've always been sorta bummed about the flare in the center of this attached shot, which I attribute to the filter.

Hey Manolo -- Thanks for the shots of your lens with B&W brand filter fitted....I'll probably have to try to find one of those, first locally then mail order as a last resort.

Connor -- I think "tone control" would have been a better term for what I do. I use a yellow filter to prevent the sky from getting blown out when I shoot B&W. From the test roll of color I shot with the 35mm f2.5 I can see that it is contrasty....almost painful <hah>.

Conor makes a very valid point. I've stopped using a yellow filter on my CV 35/2.5, the lens has plenty of contrast already. Maybe think about a light yellow (1/2 stop) instead? B+W also makes a light yellow in 39mm.

been there done that...now using the B+W brand very happy with the resu;ts

I got a good deal on brand new Hoya blue label filters (from eBay
seller BaehrMall). The UV and red filters fit fine with the stock hood.

The knurled outer ring on the polarizer won't allow it to fit, though.
I intend to use the Bessa primarily for black & white photography,
so I won't use the PL often, but I just couldn't pass up that price.

FWIW the stock metal hood is very short; it is probably more useful
in protecting the front element from scratches than as a lens shade.
I expect I will be looking for something a little more substantial...

Hey Chris,

I wanted to maintain compactness and use the stock hood on this lens. I already put together a setup with a 39mm to Series VI adapter and a Series VI lens hood to use those filters. With the stock hood I can actually fit the camera in a large pocket. Can't do that with the larger hood.

Like the B+W filters mentioned, the Hoya UV and red filters fit the
stock hood just fine. I doubt *any* polarizer will fit inside it though.

So I will start looking for a collapsible rubber WA hood.
That should work with anything, and maintain compact size...

B+W, Heliopan, Hoya and Leica all allow the lens hood to fit. I have experienced the lens hood problem with a cheap and nasty Hama filter that doesn't deserve to go on a CV lens anyway.

Some B+W filters have a very wide rim inside the filter thread that may cause vignetting with wider lenses.

I had a imilar problem with my Ultron 35mm 1.7. Namely, a standard ND B&W filter fits nicely and the lens hood over it as well. With my polarizer the story is diffrent it doesn't allow the hood over it but when you think that it needs to be continuously adjusted, that makes sense.
