what filter for lens protection?

I want to get some filters for my newly aquired Mamiya 7 lenses (80 & 150mm). I don't really know what type of filter I should get as I'm mostly concerned with having something on there to protect the front element. UV, haze, skylight?

I only shoot B&W and rarely shoot indoors. Oh, and I'd like a filter that requires no light compensation.

What would you use?

I am in principle against the use of useless filters and in favour uf using the lens shades, the reason being that any filter degrades the optical performance, and most of them, esp the non multi coated ones, will give you some extra flare and internal reflections when a light source targets your lens, even if outside the field of view.
However there are circumstances when you want to have a filter on, and as Finder said an UV, or haze filter serves the purpose without stealing any light. Myself, I'd rather put a yellow-green filter for both the outside shots and portraits, but the really important part is that it should be multicoated, and BTW the lens shade is mandatory anyway.
