Well, I just figure that if you are going to do something, it behooves you to learn something about it.
Have you never had a vintage camera case with a surface that started crumbling when you began to clean it? Ever had one that, when you scrubbed it with a toothbrush, the toothbrush ate into it? If so, that's probably what it was. Used to tear up whole libraries of leatherbound books and nobody knew why. They blamed it on gaslighting, which was only half the problem. Yep, stiff and dry. It can be brittle too.
