The one with the magical eyes and indigo (?) head covering, in a refugee camp in Afghanistan, I believe. A long time ago now.

One of the most haunting images I have ever seen.

(I'm too young to know anything about that Vietnam Napalm picture)

Did she get a cut on the licensing fees for the image?

IMHO that is the best portrait ever.

I remember so well that issue of NG showing up at the house, pulling off the paper wrapper to find those eyes searing into me. IIRC my parents still have that copy of NG sitting around.

Funny that 22 years later, it still gives me a chill up my spine.

Thanks for digging that up.

FYI, the Vietnam napalm girl currently lives in Toronto.

The Afghan girl's name is Sharbat Gula ... but it's good to read the article anyhow.

That is an amazing story.
And we can see that a very pretty young face later shows signs of a tough life, can't we?

It was Steve McCurry, and from what I understand, he has a new book out. He tends to sort of specialize in portraits, often in out-of-the-way places such as refugee camps, etc.

They say that cover on the issue of Nat. Geog. was one of the most popular and most reproduced they ever did. Almost as much of an 'icon' by now as Dorothea Lange's "Migrant Mother".

NG did an hour long documentary on the search for her after 20 yrs, interesting to watch as McCurry dealt with fakes and then his final reconciliation.
