Dave (DCSang) just did a very similar thread to this for an Elmar but I'm still wondering what happened here. No one else bid on this [Leica 50mm f2 Summitar SM Lens Item number: 7616194005] described as: (some dust, I think a very faint age haze and the mandatory Leitz bubbles) I got the lens for $140 Did I pay too much for it?

Jim, only you can tell. If all of the moving parts move smoothly, you should take some pictures before you pass judgement on your purchase. That's a good price for a serviceable Summitar.

Looks to me like a good deal. Sometimes you do simply get lucky. I got a Canon FD 50/1.4 for the opening bid of $12.95 once :)

Now and then one gets lucky and it was your turn. It looks like a very nice post-war Summitar and should take great pictures. Way to go! :)

Yes, looks OK. I'm a little surprised to see the modern f-stop series on a lens with the early "no groove" front group. But that would be an easy part to swap in during a repair, and is a practical convenience.

You will want to find the screw-clamp version of the SOOMP hood.

I don't know about the lens, but your postscript... I thought it was "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro..." I could be wrong, but I've followed HST for years and... well he may not have used leica, and if not, well, it just doesn't matter...

MP, I'm sure your right maybe under different circumstances he phrased it differently, or maybe I just got it turned around in my mind since I originally read it. To bad, it always worked for me. :)

Jim, looks like a good deal to me. I recently picked up a clean Summitar for $190. Cosmetically mine looks a little better, and it had a front lens cap, but the glass on yours looks as good as mine. I hope you enjoy the lens.

Thanks' for all your comments. I was concerned that I was somehow missing something negative about this deal when I saw that there were no other bids. Maybe I just got lucky, every time I found a lens like this it cost more then I could pay.

JIm N, Like you said.

There's a tiny bit of dust and the focus adjustment is a little too tight. But other wise it's pretty nice. This photo is from the 1st roll. (Lucky me my Leica II came back with CLA and new curtains the day after the lens came . Now I 'm wondering if I should get the lens cleaned as well. JimG
