What has caused this?

Thanks all.

I think the two problems have been diagnosed comprehensively. The first is lack of developer, and the second (a continuing problem) has to do with me being too vigorous with my tapping and inversions. I've been sloshing the tank around for up to 30secs and then giving it a good few whacks after, which all sounds like way too much.

Thanks everyone for replying. I'm sure my next rolls are going to be perfect!

p.s. thanks crawdiddy, I like the shot too and hate the fact I ruined it. Can I be bothered to fix in Photoshop?

Just curious here, where was this damaged, but still cool photo taken?

It was taken in Monaco. It was a scorcher of a day, but I seemed to be the only one sweating. What is that about rich people?

Actually, I spent all my time wandering around asking myself "What is all the fuss about?". I know if I was seriously cashed up I would avoid Monaco like the plague...

Have to say I love the effect! If you can get a high res image to me I'll see how long it would take me to Photoshop it away for you. Or I could get one of my students to do it!

I believe you may have misloaded your film. Those crescents appear when the film has been kinked or buckled when improperly loaded onto the film spiral.
i agree i have done this myself . the film was creased when loading .

Botox 🙂 Or as one of my favourite quotes goes:
For the same agent to figure as a beauty treatment as well as a weapon of biological warfare reflects strangely on the modern world.

@Rapscallion & thetooth

i definitely bent the film while loading. my reel had a malfunctioning ball bearing and damaged the negs. (oh well) but if you notice there are the same type of water/air/bubble marks in her shoulder as in the original image's sky.

Yep. Looks a little alligator-ish. I hope you weren't shooting a dermatological product.

So, maybe I could re-create this affect, on purpose, by adding a foaming agent, like detergent, use half the developer volume needed, and only have film in the upper reel of a two reel tank. Agitate vigorously, let it stand a while. Hmm...

Or save yourself the trouble and send your film to me and I'll develop it for you. 😉

Interesting that some people like the effect. Perhaps I'll print it A3 and when someone asks about the bubbles I'll tell them I spent days in the darkroom creating each one...

Thanks for the offer; but I Photoshop for a living so it's just a matter of finding the time. If I thought I could actually get some money for the image that would be a great motivator!

Creased film and either WAY too much agitation or you were not watching your temperatures and the film became reticulated -- no, wait, that would cause scales with dark outlines. Okay, way too much agitation -- probably not enough chemistry in there with the film either.

Perhaps my camera does have a light leak; but would that show the sprocket holes as per the example?

Yes, it would, if it were a minor leak somewhere along the lower edge of the film door. However, it would usually turn your film dark and your prints would be light in the corresponding area. Still, it only costs $6 to replace the seals and rule that out. http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/interslice
