Lately, if I take a bag instead of just my pockets, I've been throwing in a 90/4 Elmar--it's so light it hardly matters at all, and if I'm being extravagant, also a 15mm.

For the last 15 years, it's been an M3 with a 50- usually the DR 'cron, and a spare roll of film or two in my pocket. Sometimes I carry a small handheld meter, sometimes not. If I really anticipate a photographic opportunity, I may grab another lens better suited to the situation, but I don't like carrying more than two lenses unless I'm working (and then I'll have a couple of bodies and other gear, too). For the last few years, my minimal travel kit has been an M3 with a 50, a 21mm with finder (the little CV LTM one) and an Olympus XA with an A11 flash. With a few rolls of film and a small meter, I have 21-35-50 lenses with two bodies and flash capability all in a really small kit.

Usually I have one body with a lens on it, and occasionally a second lens in the bag.
Yesterday I took an M9 with a 18mm Super Elmar and a 28mm Summicron in the bag. Never used the 28.
Today I decided to travel light, going out with just the M9, the 18mm and an extra battery.
I find that only having one lens with me makes me concentrate on getting the picture instead of arguing with myself about which lens would get the shot best.

Small padded bag liner that transfer from courier bag, to backpack, to whatever else, as needed. It's loaded with just the essentials:

- M4
- CV 35 1.4
- One extra roll
- Twinmate
- Tiny notebook and mechanical pencil for notes
- At the bottom of the bag sits a dog-eared exposure chart, should I happen to forget the Sekonic for some reason


Everything else sits on a shelf and requires some forethought before getting picked.

When you go out to shoot for fun (as opposed to professionally) what do you take with you? Mainly, how many and what focal length lenses? I seem to always have too much stuff with me. By "too much stuff" I mean I end up spending too much time and attention on my equipment and can lose focus on the art.

typically one camera, one lens. whichever one happens to be handy or that I want to go shooting with. lately, this has been one of a Polaroid SX-70 or Spectra, a Robot II, a Hasselblad 500CM, a Leica X2, an Olympus E-PL2, a Leica M4-2, or Leicaflex SL.

yes, i have way too many cameras. the trick is not to let that bog me down ... just grab and go. 🙂

Surprised at how many people have mentioned more that one camera! I only did that twice but both times it was on trips where I wanted not so much back-up but the ability to shoot two platforms. In those occasions, one camera would stay in the room and one would get picked as the lucky one to go out and about as needed.
