What is a "Gallery"

did i mention that i really dislike rules?

and capital letters, i really hate capital letters.

i think it's time for our nightly prozak, glass of wine or brandy, whatever works for you all,
our gallery is not hurting anyone.
like tv we can choose to watch or not, change the channel or not...

joe

Oops, sorry, Joe. I was writing when you posted this subtle call to cease and desist. 🙂

i guess it wasn't that subtle...🙂

i just think dmr has it down - let's not fix what ain't broke.

as roman said, many, myself included, come here like they would a coffee shop - to share stories and look over gear and maybe the odd pic or 2.

i mean really, if anyone here thinks they are THAT GOOD that art directors are struggling to view their work, then this is the wrong place for that.
some here are great shooters and i mean no disrespect by my prior comment, but those shooters need a great website of their own or space rented on a site that is meant to and designed to SHOWCASE their work.

me, i use a blog, not for my greatness 😉 but because i want to be unique and i have some words i want others to read (poems) and rff is not an appropriate venue for either.

man, the board is getting wierd lately...but as hunter used to say 'when the going gets weird - the weird turn pro. r.i.p. man.

Joe,

what a pity ! I've put a question and I made a suggestion and I did that with the intention to contribute something constructive , something which could make RFF better.

It wasn't about "art", and it wasn't about a quality level which must make art directors sing, this is an exaggeration which lets me suppose i was intentively misunderstood. And of course it wasn't about SHOWCASES for some who think the gallery isn't the right place for their superior work. But it sounds so and I have to relate this to my person.

Correct me if I am wrong, maybe my knowledge of the foreign language is not good enuff here, but somehow your answer sounds to me a bit condescending , like the gallery is fine as it is and who cannot live with it should better go elsewhere. Basta. That's quite disappointing, both sound and content.
More the sound, to be honest.
Maybe you did not mean it this way, if so forget my words.

bertram, forgive me this next line...it's not always about you!

my comments were directed at EVERYONE who posted to this thread, if i agreed with them or not.
my intent is not to quiet people down or keep the status quo, i don't have the power to affect such changes anyway. i am merely the moderator for a forum that is owned, governed and paid for by another.

i was trying to point out that this all just seemed, to me, much ado about nothing.

every few weeks we get a newbie who comes along and floods the gallery. i email them one at a time and explain the norm here and for the most part they follow along as most here do.

if anything, i wonder if other older members are feeling a bit insecure with all the new guys and wanting to exert some control, show them who's boss kinda thing.
i like change.

Todd,
no, not sorry, not that easy. I must tell you I find this remark pretty violating. It implies I want you to make to think about my quality standards before you shoot and makes me look as an sour-faced self taught art teacher who wants to teach this community manors. How did I earn THAT ? Bertram

There may have been a misunderstanding in my response so let me reiterate, I don't consider what you or anyone else will think about an image when I take a picture. I follow my own guidelines for composition and quality when I post an image here. I don't consider you a "sour-faced self taught art teacher who wants to teach this community manors", I value your opinion as anyone elses in respect to any of my photos. I don't shoot with the preface of pleasing anyone though, I didn't mean to violate you but it seems your original post was a complaint about the quality of others gallery postings, maybe I misunderstood.

Sure, some newbies post a whole roll from their new GSN, remember your excitement when you got the first roll back? They get reminded by Joe and we all move on.

And let me tell you your remark about the "result of your gear "was surprising for me too. I always thought our photos were the result of our passion, an expression of our emotions, catching a slice of life or what else on could say.
But a result of your gear ??? Does that mean your gallery is a sample of test shots only ? Do you post pics only to show how the XY lens works ? I f so I can understand why the whole discussion sounds strange to you.

Bertram

This may shock some of you but yes, a few of my photos are simply samples of test shots. Some of them to show the bokeh of a lens, the angle of view and yes...how an XY lens works, my whole gallery no, but a few (the horror). I appreciate others who do the same because when I am searching for opinions and test shots of a particular lens or camera, I want results I can see. We have a great search engine in the gallery that allows you to enter a word like "Iskra", in return it will show images posted in the gallery taken with that camera, this is what I was speaking of. Based on the responses I get apparently several others here appreciate the information as well and have performed similar tests.

You have my permission to critique any photo in my gallery, leave whatever comments you feel appropriate, this has always been possible but seldom done, I welcome your (anyones) thoughts.

Now, can't we all just get along? 😉

Todd

I don't consider that either. And the very most of us don't do that. Where would THAT lead us to ? We are not in the biz here, our fellow members are not our clients.
I never said so, i id not mean it an so your remark was surprising.

It did not deal either with the question I had asked. The question was not if we should think about the opinion of other members before we shoot, my question was if we should think more carefully before we post a pic in the gallery. That's a different story, isn't it ?

But don't worry, Todd, I am not that sensitive , it just wanted to tell you that i feel your remark lets me look as a quite arrogant a..hole.

You say you did not mean it, over and out. The whole discussion was interesting for me anyway, it told me that the majoritie's approach to the gallery idea is quite different from mine. That's o.k. and was worth the effort. I will think about it.

Concerning the special critique forum I suggsted:
I Know very well what a hot thing photo critcism is, I know how easily it ends with offends, tears and flames. That ' what happens mostly in photoclubs and in other galleries.

The basic thing which can make it work anyway is GOODWILL on the side of the critics and selfconsciousness on the photogs site. MY idea was it could work probably at RFF, because this site is different, more grown ups here than in some other forums if you know what I mean.

Who are you calling a grownup?🙂

🙂

As far as the manors are concerned at least 90% of those who take part at public discussions. Tho beeing girls and boys with toys as all the other photogs in the web nonetheless somehow we manage it to keep that certain level of respect which makes it possible to discuss different opinions without ending in a sandbox punch up struggling for the big shovel. .
Well sometimes we are quite close to it, i admit that ............... 😀 😀 But discussing AT the limits is not discussing OVER the limits of decent behaviour . That the decisive point for me.

Bertram
