i have the possibility of getting a sony rx100 in like new shape for 300 bucks cdn...

i have no idea, other than a quick look at ebay, what they are going for these days...
i had one before, loved it, but sold it when i was out of work...i'm currently using a panasonic lx3 for a daily carry but the sony is better image wise...

Hi Joe, Amazon is selling a brand new rx100 for 498 with free shipping. Maybe that would help. If the one you have available is truly like new 300 seems like a good deal but I would still offer somewhat less since like new is def not new.

I'd think of it this way: if you can get a brand new one for $200 more, is that worth the extra money to you or is the one you can get for $200 less good enough?

Personally, I'd save the $200 if the used one was in like new condition.

I sold one a year ago for $300. Great images... lousy inerface.
It may just be me. I need cameras that are similar enough to each other in layout.
The rx100 had great IQ but was the "odd man out" among my other cameras.
Something to think about when considering what it's worth.

i tried out an rx100 mkiii recently and found the same thing. interface was fiddly and menu heavy. the viewfinder would constantly black out unless i had my face squished right up to the thing. wanted it to work out for me but back to the Contax t3 i went.

I'm still trying to find the perfect pocket camera. I have had both the mark I and mark II versions of RX100 and both have gone. Sony menus have a lot to answer for, but I suppose if used prices are down to $300 or less that makes them a bit easier to live with.

I agree the Sony menu's are a pain and spoil the experience, but on the other hand the IQ is exceptional for such a small camera. If you are buying second hand you should check with any of these small compacts if any dust shows up in skies when the aperture is at f/16, it's either a show stopper or a bargaining chip depending at which aperture it actually starts to appear.

Seeing as that's roughly US$255, I'd say it's a deal... If it's the camera you really want. I had one too and sold it. Held out for the third version but after testing it out at the shop, went home empty handed.

Ultimately went for the Ricoh GR with OVF. It's not quite pocketable per se, but a lovely tool.

Yep, 300 CAD is something like 250 USD.
Use it for couple of years, sell for 100.

Or get the Hasselblad Stellar for $1000 (70% off!!) and wear it proudly. All the RX100 goodness plus a wooden grip.
;-)

I replaced my LX3 with a Nikon V1 when they went to fire-sale prices.
Not as pocketable as the Rx100, but same size sensor and an EVF.
You had an Rx100 before and liked it, seems a no brainer. LX3 was a great camera in its day, but I wouldn't trade back.

yes, i did have one before and was amazed at what it could produce...not worried about menus...i set it up and leave it...
however, the seller has not gotten back to me so not sure what will happen...

Its weight in gold haha.

I have the Mk1, (The 2 didn't seem like enough reason to upgrade and the change of FL for the 3 means it's not for me).

It reliably punches WAY above its weight class, yes it's a bit menu based to start with, but once you get it set up, all of the things you want regularly are easily accessible. Every time I take it out I'm reminded what a truly special tiny package it is.

looks like a no deal day for me...i prefer to meet in a public place when buying from a stranger and he wants to meet at his place...stalemate for now.
too bad as i like the little sony...will keep my eye on the classifieds here and locally i guess.

and as an add on...it came with a 32gig sd card included...

Great camera, especially at that price. I actually bought mine after you bought your first one and discussed it here on RFf. I still have it. A bit battered and bruised, it goes everywhere because of the pocketable convenience. Recently, the wife has taken a liking to it and so her old DSLR stays at home now. Menus: once setup, I really only ever go back in to FORMAT the card after a dump. This is beyond simple as it is set to go to the last task. I have considered the Mk.III with the EVF and will most likely buy one, but not until after this one dies.

Jeff, I wasn't very impressed with the EVF on the III. but if the other features make it worth the upgrade, might be a nice option.

Canon EOS M. Much bigger sensor...fast and great 35mm equivalent lens. Slightly larger as the lens doesn't retract but much better built, and cheaper, too...

I've owned the RX. No contest.. The Canon is an amazing little cam for the money. And it focuses super close...paid $265, mint in box.

Joe

If u are after a front jean pocket --> pocketable everyday carry solution..I have both rx100mk1 and the Ricoh gr apsc. I like using the gr better. It has better high iso and I like its handling much better than the rx100.

If it does not have to be front jean pocket --> what about picking up the 27f2.8 pancake again for the xe1 or a lx100 or x100 (original)?
