A few friends and I have been tossing around the idea of an online magazine to support documentary photography in our region. We were hoping to keep it focused on taking pictures and all that goes into it versus a gear site. Resources for people just starting out, exposure, networking and that sort of thing. Interviews with established pro's, editors, curators and? A section on awards and available grants. Exposure for good work and more?

So, what do you all think is missing in the online maze that is photography magazines/blogs?

Is there anything in particular you would like to see?

This will not be a review/gear site. There are enough of those going on.

Your thoughts/suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

I'd like to see more "experimental" stuff, i.e. try the more eclectic films, maybe very long exposure advice.

I'd say just mix it up a bit, Steve Huff has a good site, but it's quickly gone from a general photo site to a Leica M9 site, and as interesting as that camera may be, you can't read about it every day.

For documentary photography, the story behinds it is more powerful. Without explaining the context, one can simply dig up photos anywhere. Therefore, a photo with a short paragraph or an article attached is much stronger.

there will also be interviews and input from some of the established photographers working today. offering insight into the process.

focus on getting consistently high level of content (be it just the images themselves, the personalities or stories revealed in the images and the process) and change it up regularly.. spend time and resources on marketing it via every single low cost channel (ie. social networks) possible and hopefully, if the work is good enough, it'll get attention from the right people who might be in a position to offer the contributors work...

high level of content will be an absolute. the marketing via low cost channels (twitter and what not) will be a new experience for me however i believe it is fundamental in the "new skill set". it will be a learn as we go deal.

thank you for the input!
