Under $350 or thereabouts?
I have excellent I-61 and I-26 copies, but I am looking for more snap, f2.8 or faster, but not super fast.
Nokton? CV? Leica? Canon?

Leica Elmars or Summicron. The 3.5 Elmar is my favorite.

Paul,
There are numerous excellent 50mm lenses out there.
The first version Elmar 50mm/2.8 comes to mind and the Canon 50mm/1.4 LTM.

Good Elmar 2.8s are going for very high prices, from what I have seen on Ebay and elsewhere. That is one of my dream lenses because I owned one 30 years ago.
The Canon 1.4 might be doable, as well as the Nikkor 5cm/f2. A well-tuned J-8 is easily doable from a price standpoint, but I prefer click-stop apertures.

If you are using FED's you have to take notice of the wisdom from Dante Stella

Something to consider.
I give the nod to a great example of Jupiter 8 or Jupiter 3

Thanks, classic. I am aware ofr the flange business. I do not understand it, but I am aware of it. Perhaps I need to look for a really good J-3 and get it shimmed to my FED-2, or a good, tabbed J-8 shimmed to fit precisely ...

Another good discussion can be found here Paul. http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=009JmF
I do however not think you need to get the J-3 shimmed to the FED. Not at all.
Stick with the russians on the FED's and Zorkis. I have found it to be the best path. All the stiff Leicaphiles comments on the monday-hangover-russians depend on the construction and not on the "bad apples". In fact is the monday faliures what makes them work well on the Leica. Unless they have them shimmed to fit.
When using Leica or Canon or Nikon on FED/Zorki its the other way around. I have yet to hear about modifications of Leica, Canon and Nikon RF lenses to fit the russians.

For corner2corner sharpness, get a planar-based design. And correct adjustment is more important than anything else. For your budget, I would get a clean Canon 50/1.8, and maybe invest into Sherry making it perfect. No Sonnar or Tessar-based lens will be able to stand up to that.

What Roland said.
The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens. If you want more speed, the Canon 1.4 is the best way to go for you money, in my opinion. I love mine, as do many rangefinder users.

I'll give another nod to the Canon 50 1.8. I love mine. Great lens.

If you want a modified planar at extra cost. Go for it.
Put your money on a pre 1955 J-3 and enjoy yourself without looking back. IMHO
Check Flickr.com and search for LTM Canon 50mm 1.8 and do the same with Jupiter 3. Dismiss the wandering star...

I use the Canon 50mm 1.4 on my M2 an M3 cameras and the J-3, J-8, Industar 61/LD and Industar 50 on my Zorki 2 and Zorki 4K
I will eventually put up the Canon for sale. Its in great shape. Some would call it perfect...

Thats a good point! Nobody considered a Color-Skopar 2.5/50? Tack sharp, build like a tank and no shimming requiredFor corner2corner sharpness, get a planar-based design. ... No Sonnar or Tessar-based lens will be able to stand up to that.

I have both the 50 and the 35 Color Skopar. When you don't need anything faster than 2.5, there is no reason to look any farther.

Both of those Skopars are on my interest list, but I may hold out for M versions when I get an M body sometime in the next several months - I hope, I hope, I hope ...
