What is so great about vented hoods?

As the title suggests, I am not wise in the ways of vented hoods... I know why a perfect hood is "perfect", but what is up with vented hoods, other than making them slightly lighter and easier to bend/break by removing reinforcing material? Help me out a bit here.

Thank you in advance,
Bob Clark

Since most of the time with RF cameras, we see the lens and hood through the viewfinder, having a vented hood gives you at least some idea what you are missing.

#edited for spelling, heh.

Along similar lines, and not wanting to pollute the forum with more small threads... are there any LTM or Leica M compatable lenses that don't have filter rings that rotate during focusing or aperture changes like my current lenses? I plan on going the Leica M route in the next year or two (one of the M4 variations with f/2 or faster 35, 50, and 90mm lenses). Not a big filter guy (red 25 for some B&W), but I like shades for the usual reasons, hence why I asked to begin with🙂.

Peter: Yes, that is true ... maybe. I wonder about a rectangular hood being more efficient because it follows the format of the film. But that's probably not the case.

Actually I think it is the case. There's a guy over on PN who is constantly lecturing about that.
