On the Rollei 35 LED, It doesnt seem to serve any purpose, what is its purpose?

It's the lens lock release.
Press the button and turn the lens to push it into the body. Pull the lens out and twist in the opposite direction to take pictures.

From this manual I suppose it unlocks the lens so that you can slide it back into the body:

thats odd because I can do all that without pushing that button. On this camera the shutter must be cocked before I put the lens back in the body but pushing the button is not required.
