I think here at rff the word is content .
It feels like content of a photograph is held above all other attributes or, methods of the photograph and how it came to be.

I dont think its particually rangefinder specific, however I do think its very gear related.
Most posts seem to relate to 'new camera XX' or similar. It would be more interesting with focus on photos instead!

i don't think this is accurate any more...there are tons of images on rff, in the threads showing what the gear can do.
we are very gear orientated but images are a very strong focus here as well.

The ethos here seems to me to be a love of all aspects of photography -- in all forms, whether it be with non-RFs or digital. I really like the latitude allowed here to discuss various topics, even those that are much more metaphysical and not necessarily related to photography at all.

I dunno, I sometimes get a sense of anti-digital creeping in here and there. Not APUG-esque however but still palpable to me.
If I had to think of an ethos, gear centric would be the first thing that popped into my head. This site has shown some amazing generosity as well however and is also a source of some great links to wonderful photography.

I think the ethos is mostly community whether it's gear-centric or image centric.

I second that. It really is about community. Almost family. There's the cool aunt and the crazy uncle.
This site is responsible for getting me hooked on RF gear as a way to make images. And I love it! I've bought and sold on here as well, but when I was starting into rangefinders, it was a place to get answers. And that's still true, but now I can provide my opinions as well. And do so without getting harrassed.

i think there's an element of (oh, god i hate this word) authenticity in all the photos. we see stuff with a minimal amount of post processing. ok, we have some double exposure guys and sometimes there's some cool color isolation and we all sharpen and tune up pix, but we seem to be more about real photos of real things than about bee-yoo-tiful photoshop creations. you know, dogs on green organic blobs hanging over rainbow waterfalls. as was said here a while back, that stuff might be art but it ain't photography. we seem to be more about the photography. sometimes that's stripped-down film work, sometimes digital, sometimes DSLR-ey but the farther one gets from the ur-leica, the more one seems to be tempted to start making photoshop art.

Hard to pin down isn't it. Closest I can come is to think of it like an extended family with all that that entails. There is a large range of skill levels represented, a willingness to help out if necessary and a diversity of opinion with the occasional squabble thrown in. A little something for everyone and a comfortable place because of that.
