What is wrong with this scan?

Hi,

I just scanned some images with my Plustek 8100 using Silverfast 8. When I was in my editing softwear to remove a few dust spots I noticed that the images we blocked un in some areas of detail like the image below. What did I do wrong? I haven't noticed it before on other images.

Possibly too much sharpening, or, could you have "dust removal" turned on?

Generally on most scanners, "dust removal" only works properly with color film.

Dust Removal doesn't work on BW film because the scanner's IR sensors get confused by the silver and think it's dust.

The Silverfast software has dust removal specifically for black and white films. I've used it before without any problems so maybe I used the colour film one or turned it up too high by accident.

Interesting. I wonder how well it works? Here is a line from their info:

• The preview window shows identified defects marked in red

So you should be able to tell in the preview if it is the dust removal causing that issue.

I was on auto pilot scanning and working from home at the same time and didn’t bother using the preview haha. Lesson learned 🙄

When I’ve used it in the past it has worked really well.

IR dust removal fails with B&W silver film (OK with C-41 B&W films). Digital ICE is the best known. I've seen it leave serious artifacts on B&W film.

It appears that Silverfast has two version of dust/scratch removal. SRDx is software, run it on any scan. I've had modest results with this software.

iSRD is based on the IR channel.

To me it looks like excessive temperature differentiation during film processing.
