I've been freaking out lately. I'm hiring an assistant, and it's a basic production artist assistant. But going through all the resumes is depressing. Not just the fact that so many people are looking for work, but the thought that my resume doesn't hold much weight either. My art degree isn't worth very much, my graphic design diploma is worth less.

I'm doing pretty well in my niche but could I survive outside it? Am I going to be doing this until I retire? Gah! My wife is feeling increasingly trapped behind the "Orange Curtain" and the school system here in California is collapsing, potentially damaging her educational goals as well. Heck, I probably need to be reeducated as well.

Not sure what to do. I love photography, video editing, archeology, history, geology, all sorts of things. I'm just kind of regretting taking the path of least resistance in my life. But I'm just 30 so there's plenty of time to change things around. It's been 7 years, maybe it's time I returned to Canada.

Darkhorse, my son has a degree in graphic design from Columbia College and hasn't been able to find a job since he graduated 3 years ago. I'm beginning to wonder about the worth of such a degree (I know what it cost). He's had a few "intern" jobs at a couple of ad agencies but that's about it. My other son, who does home remodeling (specializes in interiors) has steady work, can't keep up, and he could use some help. So maybe Will, the college grad, will end up working for Randy, the high school grad!

The original theory was that these forums attract more technically-minded people rather than "artsy, creative" types...

Given this is an Internet forum, and that many technical types might prefer to get away from computers some in their free time (that's why I like older all-manual cameras), it's a reasonable theory.

My B.A. is in history, I served as an officer in the Army, worked in the medical field for a time, and currently work in the IT field. I couldn't choose one so I selected "something else."

Product designer, though my friends would probably say photographer.. they never hear me talk about my day-job much haha (can blame NDA's for that as well of course).

Wedding videographer + managing several investments in organic produces. I love to get my hands dirty. i have BSc in microbiology & MBus in Asian Business.

An academic here. When people ask, I kinda hate admitting I'm a criminologist because people think: CSI! Hercule Poirot! and I hate to shatter their illusions by explaining it's nothing that exciting. So instead I usually describe myself as a sociologist or a political theorist, both of which sum up aspects of what I do.

I ticked 'Other' - I work in superannuation (Australia's retirement system, similar to UK pensions & US 401K plans) providing technical & investment consulting services within a large financial services firm.

It's a means to an end more than anything else - it pays the bills & enables my GAS to not affect my lifestyle / financial stability!

Interesting work! Where do you teach?

Signwriter or more 'sign designer/maker/large format printer/cnc router/engraver/laser/cutter operator' not long after the inception of desktop pc's.

Love it ...and get to play with 62" wide epsons, just printed an 8000mm x 3000mm black & white of Sydney Harbour.

I started in the medical field with a BS in Nursing. However, I've since changed to science and engineering, working on getting a dual major in Physics and Aerospace engineering. I still work as a psych nurse, but my passion lies in science.

radiation oncologist, kids have left home, so plenty of time (.......) for being enthousiastic for photography. Within next weeks finishing a course on photoreflection (photoanalysis photohistory etc) in order to start a gallery with photography of others. I enjoy photography myself but mainly photographs from others; my pictures are for learning, learning, learning. This forum is highly inspiring: never thought of starting with film again, but I recently did and enjoy it.
