What is your favorite Canon FD body?

I have previously owned a T70, A-1 and now own a F-1N. For me there is no question the F-1N is my favorite. Great camera and the build takes a backseat to no other camera I have owned.

Hi Raid,

Your inclusion of the EOS-1 reminds me that it was Canon's abrupt and (in my mind, cruel) switch from the FD mount to the incompatible current mount that drove me (and my -now defunct - company) to Olympus and Nikon. When digital hit, I was firmly in the Nikon camp.

I did not like the EOS-1, even though it may have been a marvel of its time. I did the opposite from what you have done. FD lenses went down in cost, so I got more and more excellent FD lenses. I was upset, of course, that Canon dropped the FD line.

Raid--I'm new to the FD line, but have jumped into them as an inexpensive entry to good glass for digital (Sony A7II). (Along the way I also ended up with a nice F-1 too--it's a brick!)

Given your long and extensive experience shooting FD, what are the best/must have lenses? I'm so impressed with many I have tried.

Cheers,
Daniel

I'm not Raid. I still own the Canon EF and 50mm Macro and 35mm F-3.5 lens that I bought in 1975. If you can live with 3.5 max. apertures, both lenses are critically sharp.
My faster lenses are the 35/2.0 concave front element, floating rear element SSC lens and 50/1.4 SSC lens. Both highly regarded. Both not overly expensive.
I also own the FDn 24/2.8 FLE lens. A fantastic 24 mm lens.
Last, but not least, a Sigma FDn 24-70 zoom. The perfect walk around and travel lens.
Since digital and lens adapters happened, Canon FD lens prices have risen. However, they are still undervalued in my opinion.

Original F-1 is my fave. Got to respect its build and mechanical marvel. Cameras will never, ever be manufactured like this again. I just love everything about it. The whole look and feel reminds me of that line of Samuel L Jackson's in Pulp Fiction: "It's the one that says bad ass mutha****er".

Thanks--I appreciate the response. My experience with FD glass is limited to use with Canon mirrorless and now the Sony A7II over the last two years, but I share your high opinion of the 35/2, 50/1.4 and 24/2.8. My versions of the latter two are the FDn models, but I have the same SSC, concave, thorium, floating element 35/2. It's always better than it seems it has any right to be.

I picked up the 100/2 for portraits and it's brilliant for that. The 80-200/4L has also turned out to be an amazing lens. It couldn't be sharper than it is.

Cheers,
Daniel

Stupidly sold my like new EF a couple of weeks ago on Catawiki. Had to look at it for a week sitting pretty for the auction date.... it hurt.

Hi Daniel,
I have not used all FD lenses!
For me, my favorite FD lenses include:

85mm/1.2L
80-200mm/4L
50MM/1.2L
500mm/4.5L
35mm/2.8 Tilt/Shift

The 28-50 zoom (not the 28-55 lens) is an excellent short zoom.
I love my Angeneuix 70-210/3.5 FD. It is an awesome lens. I also like using the 17/4 FD for wide angle images. It has very little distortion that I can detect.

There are many FD lenses to choose from.
