What is your favorite combination for overcast day

Suppose rodinal in 1:25 would do well. Don't you want more contrast on overcast days?

Anything works, but I would use medium contrast film and develop perhaps 10% more. If more required, print with higher contrast paper or condenser enlarger.

That said, unless I were doing portraits or fog shots, I prefer to stay indoors or pursue something else like woodworking.

I think you are right Alkis. It is unfair to compare them. I just wondered what people prefer. I am generally using 400 films @400 at overcast days. Also I got much better results with 100 films but in that case I have lack of shutter speed. Anyway we have to live with that 🙂

Overcast can't beat afternoon light. It just doesn't have the same modeling qualities. There's one exception: right before an electrical storm. All sorts of magical things happen then. A couple of your shots above are made with light that veers in that direction.

As to which film/developer for overcast weather: I use routinely Trix at nominal speed with D76. It doesn't get more basic than that. ISO 400 films are practically designed with overcast weather in mind and they give proper contrast with viable shutter speeds for moving subjects. If we are talking UK-in-January kind of overcast then I push one stop. Heck, maybe even two. In which case HP5+ also looks really nice.

Sure. That's what I want but not differences between blacks and whites. I also don't want to loose gray speration. That is the hard part.

I love PMK. The tonality I get is incredible. My favorite films with it are Ilford FP4 and Ilford HP5. It works great with Fuji Acros 100, Kodak Tmax 100 and Tmax 400. I don't like it with Tri-X; I think D-76 is a better developer for that film.

For people photography, I have found that overcast light is best. I consider it like having a softbox up in the sky! I can perform additional things to do sculpting with light on faces of subjects.

I have photos I made of beautiful sky while in places like Florida. If I want to change the sky in a photograph, like what I've experienced like Florida, I can slide those in using layers in PS. You know what, I have never had to use any of my sky photos. Faces are at the center of photographs I make!
