ywenz said:Isn't this question kind of pointless? The trade value of any item is its market value in $s. Am I on to something here? Would people trade their own equipment for something of lesser value if they really like that particular item? Unless, it's a one-off, I doubt it!
I think there is an additional layer above this logic, ywenz. There is a personal value as well. For example, I would not trade any of my M leicas for a dslr even though its current market value is greater. (This is not only because I'm not into digital photography, it is also because I know that in 10 years, the Leicas will then have a market value greater than today's dslr.)

I wouldn't trade the Leicas for any digital body. I sit here in front of this screen enough for work, and enough for fun that I can't imagine sitting in front of it instead of bopping around in the darkroom. No thanks, I'll stay wet.

I could be tempted to trade my M2 for a K10D or R-D1. The M2 will undoubtedly be worth more than either in 10 years, but I may no longer be around at that point

I purchased my MP shortly before my grandmother passed away. I originally purchased the camera as a reward for myself after I received a promotion at work. Every time I use it now, I think of her. She was single mother to six children and she made tremendous sacrifices to give her children and grandchildren a better life. I don't think I would ever want to part with this particular camera for this reason.

I'm not planning on trading my M7s for anything. That implies moving from one system to another and I've only ever done that twice. If the question is around perceived value, for me it doesn't matter because I got the cameras to use not speculate about. With any luck my kids will use them when I pass on.

I am not planning to trade my M2 and M3 (in fact, I bought the M3 back). That is because I like them, I use them, and I don't think I can replace them without spending more, should I want them back.
Not because of any emotional attachment. If I decided I would rather take bird photos, then I'd trade them for a DSLR and a long lens. My emotional attachment is to the photographs that they have made.
Not because of any perceived value 10 years from now. Sure they may still be working then, but we don't even know if there will still be film then. If there isn't, they will be as valuable as 8-track players.

OK, I'll jump in: I would never trade anything towards a digital camera. Ever. That said, I would consider, and may do so soon, trading one of my Leica M bodies and a lens to get a Hasselbald SWC. But trading requires a tough assessment of value, whereas selling an item, getting the cash, and then shopping makes more sense to me. And I heartily concur with Colyn: our Leica (and Nikon and Canon rangefinder gear) will go up in value in the years ahead, or at least stay the same, while digital prices and value will drop (live by the megapixel, die by the megapixel). And I used to worry that my "collector" Leicas and other make rangefinders would not have a market when I sell them off in the years ahead, but the number of younger rangefinder and quality-conscious RFF members has me feeling better about that. Meanwhile, I own them to use them and enjoy their design and precision. So, nrb: please let yourself enjoy that M2, ok? :~)
Happy weekend all.

Leica MP for trade with DSLR. OH, YEAH. I Do That
Leica MP for trade with DSLR. OH, YEAH. I Do That
I'm so tired of people dreaming how they'll buy real estate in Hawaii with the money of an M2 or M3. I'll gladly trade my crome Leica MP with chrome Leicavit and black Sonnar-C lens for your Nikon lenses and/or dslr anytime. Old Nikkor AIS are fine , too. I might consider Canon too. Honestly, is anybody interested? Please send me details of what you have. Leica lenses and cameras minimum focusing distance drives me crazy everytime I try to get a picture.

I have Nikon F bodies and many lenses, Rollei TLRs, Contax IIIa, and others. My family gave me an M3 for my 60th, and it's like being 21 again! I'd swap the whole lot of other cameras for another M!

My M6 is worth the cost of a replacement M6 if it gets stolen/broken. Not interested in trading it in for any alternative.
