what lowest price will entice you to Hexar RF

Hi

A photo journalist here need money fast to upgrade his gear before the end of the year. To raise the money he is willing to sell his hexanon rf with two lenses (hexanon 50/f2 and 28/f2.8) lenses for as low as I feel morally right. They look really good though the original buyer have taped some black tapes over the top part of the camera. I have tested them and they work great but they were/are above my budget.

Since my last post here I have gone through a process of giving up on 35mm RFs + I am afraid that the small frame for 90mm in the hexar may be an obstacle for me. I want to help him and at the same time give myself another chance with it. However, I am afraid that my mind is already set up in a different direction so I am looking also for a way to reduce the risk just in case I will see that my heart is no longer there.

I wonder if there is anyone here that will be interested in this kit and for how much or (how little :))?

Depends on actual condition. Me - I hate cameras that are taped up. If tape comes off and has no ill effect on paint, etc. - that it's not so bad.
Anyway, in great working and cosmetic condition, sold as a kit, I'd say a fair price would be about $1400-1500 USD
Sold separately, body- 700-750, 50/2 - 400-450, 28/2.8 - 600-650 USD.
Anything lower - great deal, anything higher - not bad, but can be found at better prices on ebay.
 
I didn't like the otherwise nice Hexar RF because of the whimpy controls. The controls are easy to break. Not designed for daily pro use AFAIK.

1) i wish it had the hexar AF super quiet motor drive as an option. apart from that i prefer it over winding since you have to drop the camera from eye level. i always thought it would be an issue yet it didn't feel like much of a problem with my M6.

2) but still good enough to focus a noctilux. just ask tommy oshima.

3) shutter speeds are infinitely more useful in judging exposure than arrows.

4) right...other RFs never go off alignment?

the controls are positive and do not dislodge easily. they are the same to any modern day dSLRs. i suppose those are not used by pros for daily use?

"modern day Pro dslrs" are much more stout.

I am not saying the hexar RF does not have any great features. It does. Its automatic, AE, easy load, metered, and I thought the .62 mag was great. Pretty nice street camera.

I owned a Hexar for a short while. The shutter speed wheel jacked up easily -- or was sold to me this way -- didnt notice for a few days; I had it factory repaired and sold it. The factory does not repair these anymore so your own in the event of a problem.

I'd much rather take the money and buy a M4-P, will last forever, and any number of people can repair them.

Mine cost me $350.00 USD when I bought it ... right here on the forum!

I do think I was a little lucky. :)

Well, while everyone has different understanding as to what "Pro" use means, I can tell you that I've had Hexar RF for a couple of years now and it works just the same as when I first got it. Maybe not a "pro" use, but regular use. I used to have M3 and M6 - both got sold off after I got Hexar. Again - personal prefferences, perhaps.
I used to do some "Pro" photography a while back for a while. I can tell you that while it wouldn't suit me as well as MF and SLR, I wouldn't hesitate to bring Hexar as a back up at least. Just for what I did any RF wouldnt do it for me as a main camera.
As far as lasting forever - well - any camera can break. And any camera can last a long time. I about 2 years I had Leicas - all went to get a CLA. Hexars never needed one. Money I spent to CLA Leicas could have gotten me another Hexar RF or a Bessa.
I find Hexar to be a near perfect camera. But as I said - everyone has different needs/likes.
All I can tell you - it works well for me.

Absolutely perfect aside from a missing frame preview lever which didn't worry me at all because I never use them and I sold it without ever bothering to get one. In all other ways the camera was faultless and never did a thing wrong in the year I owned it. In the end the Hexar wasn't personally 'me' so I sold it ... but I still believe that they are the best rangefinder in that available price bracket that money can buy. I loved the controls, viewfinder magnification, rangefinder etc but in the end I think it was the motorwind that didn't quite fit with me.

When I take a shot I like to hear silence after the click of the shutter ... not the whirr of the film being advanced to the next frame. :)
