What makes the M5 great?

The meter (not the mechanics of it ....) is for sure one of the strong points of this camera. I also like the M4-like design of the frame lines, the bottom-plate rewind crank and the large shutter dial.

The large shutter dial coupled with the meter needle makes this camera the best alternative to AE equipped cameras, IMHO. As has been mentioned, loading film is very safe.

The two strap lugs don't bother me at all (also the usage of the Leica case could solve this) and the size of the camea is ideal for large lenses.

I like my M5 ! 🙂

I think there's a certain rogue appeal with the M5 ... the Leica that Leica themselves didn't want in the end! Sent out into the cold where it's been embraced by people who like something that isn't the staus quo from a stuffy company steeped in tradition!

I still miss the one I had!

Thanks for your replies gents. I can assure you I have not posted over 4 billion times. Clearly an error somewhere along the line. It should have been 3 billion!!

I bought my M5 for the METER. I use Sunny 16 with my M2, with great success. But inside, or in difficult light, the M5 is as intuitive to use, as the M2, IMO. Nearly a hundred rolls of B&W film, and the spot-metering system is right-on-the-nose. Absolutely awesome metering system, M5 has become my good friend I can take anywhere.

It's all in the photo.net review?

Hello All,

I am an infrequent poster to the forum. I certainly havent started any threads.

As an avid M5 user, I've noted very few threads in recent weeks about the M5, so I thought its time to start one.

Having, at one time or another, owned and used all the Wetzlar M's my view is that it is still the one of the best user/shooter cameras. Great, accurate meter, overhanging shutter speed dial, uncluttered framelines, film rewind tucked away in the baseplate and basically a beautifully engineered camera overall.

I suppose all the Wetzlar M cameras are great in their own right.

But for me it is the meter and its accuracy that makes the M5 the camera that it is.

Any thoughts from other users ?

Best,

Tony
