What mount is it?

I got this 28mm manual Tamron but haven't had a chance to use it yet; it won't mount on Nikon ME or D90. Could someone tell me what mount it may be? Thanks!

Looking at this page: http://rick_oleson.tripod.com/index-99.html, the impression I get is a Nikon Ai mount. You have to scroll down about half a page to find it.

This page here: http://www.momentcorp.com/review/nikon_mf_lens_versions.html, has somewhat clearer images.

Not sure if I have the correct one, hopefully I have helped somewhat.

The rabbit ears don't have holes in them so it may be a non-Ai mount, therefore the reason it won't mount on the (I'm assuming you mean) EM or D90. But then again, I have a Tamron adapt-all mount for Nikon and the ears don't have holes in them and it's a Ai mount.

Dave, BSchall - thanks a bunch for the info, after looking at the 1st website I think I have an non-Ai mount lens. It looks like it can be converted to AI mount for $25-35.

But I don't see the milled out part of the aperture ring on the back of the lens. On an Ai mount there is a cut-out section that moves the Ai lever on the camera body to indicate the f-stop. So I would say this is a non-Ai F mount lens.

BE CAREFUL! It can damage most modern Nikon cameras if you try to mount it, by bending or breaking the Ai lever.

It appears to be a Non-AI lens...back then the rabbit ears didn't have the holes in them because there weren't any numbers behind them...the holes were there to allow light to pass through so one could read them in the viewfinder...
The older lenses will mount on newer bodies as long as the bodies allow the AI tab on the mounting ring to flip-up out of the way...do not force these lenses on newer bodies...

That old Tamron probably isn't worth converting to AI. They weren't the greatest of lenses back then.

I have searched for samples or any mention of this particular lens but no luck at all. At this point I am more curious than anything.

John is great to deal with. I sent two vivitar non-ai lenses to him and they came back within a week. The job is also topnotch.
Not all off-brand (non nikon) non-ai lenses can be converted so be sure to ask him first.

Get a strong small screw driver and take off the aperture ring, grind it down with a Dremel after carefully marking the right spots.

You can do it. Worst case how much have you lost?

Got confirmation from John White that he can do the conversion, $35, am going for it since I am chicken and would never ever take a tool to a lens 🙂

Thanks everyone for the info and advice, I really appreciate it. I am looking forward to playing with a 28mm prime on my recently acquired D90. Having been a devout Pentax enthusiast for a while now, I do not have many lenses in Nikon mount, so this will be great!

Converted lens won't mount on D90 but ok on F5

Converted lens won't mount on D90 but ok on F5

So I got the converted Tamron back and it will not mount on the D90. It will go in, then I can twist it about 2.5mm CCW and then it stops. I tried it on an F90 and F5 and it mounted like butter. Thus I wonder - what can be different between the F5 and D90 mounts that's preventing this lens from mounting the D90? I'd appreciate any ideas, this is very puzzling to me.

Did you choose the type B conversion? It should mount fine though the metering will be off any way.

I did but it appears that the "the outside diameter of the lens mount on the newest bodies is a tiny bit larger than that of the older bodies" (I *just* got an email from John White on this). I guess removing more or all of the overhanging aperture ring may be the way to go.
