I guess the rangefinder of my bessa r3a is broke. i don't really have the know-how to really identify what the problem is. there is a vertical offset of approximately 2 mm... also the front barrel of my nokton 40/1.4 is slightly loose, but that's another story 😀

for now the question is, how can i use my bessa properly with this problem because i'm in the middle of a 1 month euro trip and I don't really can bring it to any service... i also want to take some pictures but i don't really want to waste any film, if the photos will not turn out like i want them to 🙂

at least i have my XA as a backup with me

suggestions? anybody? should i use my XA or shoud I stick with the bessa and see what happens?

Vertical offset is a pain but the RF may still focus properly. Check using the moon at infinity and closer objects of known distance.

i'm not really good at guessing distances but i'm about 1.9 meters high and when i focus from breast-height down on the bottom it says 1.5 meters. i guess that is "ok".

Is the vertical displacement constant, or do you only notice it with the 40 Nokton when you are at minimum focus? Bessa RF/VF corrects for parallax.

Youu probably should change your avatar, too. Some might find it offensive.

added: what a waste of my 1,000th post.

it's constant with the 40mm. unfortunately I don"t any other lens I could try it with...

@erikhaugsby: do you find it offensive? because this is the first complaint i got... i've heard that it is funny a couple times but this is the first time someone got offended

ps: i'm really really sorry for your loss

A 40 mm is wide enough to permit scale focussing at medium and greater distances.

While I do not find the avatar altogether hilarious, I don't see why it should be objectionable.

Condolences erik.

tia, don't worry about it.

If you're still worried, snap off a roll like it is and get some 20/30/60 minute prints done. Just to give you peace of mind.

Unless you're nowhere near a minilab, in which case I still wouldn't worry about it. If the focus marks say 1.5 metres from your chest the DoF should mask any inconsistences as payasam posted.

EDIT: And keep the avatar, I see much more "offensive" images on the front of the red-tops every day 🙂

Why do some people scream censorship on this site, then other times at the mention of the word porn or an avatar with partial nudity (not just your's deadsexy) people get upset?

I thought the avatar was funny, but what do I know.

Deadsexy: hope you get things worked out. What a drag for things to misbehave on a 1 month trip. Perhaps just try shooting with the smallest possible aperture so that you've got the largest depth of field possible. Related to that, perhaps this will contain some useful info:

Good luck!
