First Rangefinder Suggestions

More fun to spend someone else's money? Sometimes. But I sure do like shopping for yet another lens 🙂

I'll hold off on lenses for a while I think. I love the 40mm f1.2 on my sony, so I'm, pretty comfortable working in 40mm.

I might get a 50mm in the future, or go wider with a 28mm and a viewfinder.

First things first, I gotta get some film through this to check the rangefinder accuracy, lightleaks, etc.

Loving this camera!

Just finished my first roll and wasn't too sure things would be in focus. Turned out pretty good!

The only problem I have with the R3M is that the frame counter is a bit finicky and seems to be stuck. I've tried opening the door when loading new film but it won't reset.

There should be a small latch under the door. Sometimes grime will cause it to stick. Open the door, take a look. I've cleaned the latch on other cameras with a little alcohol to allow it to move freely. Worth a look.

Yep, see the little silver bit in the edge where the door closes? That's what should move back and forth to reset IIRC from my Bessa R a lifetime ago. This is an internet picture of a R3M like yours.

I tried to press the latch a few times when the door was last open, is there a trick to it?

Should it be pretty easy to press down? It felt like I needed almost a half a pound of force to get it to go down, maybe it's stuck up?
Is there any other control I can press or play with to loosen it?

The latch should be easy to press IF it is in the correct position. It sounds like it is getting stuck in the down position, and not coming up to the correct position with the back open. In that case- do not force it. Post a picture showing the extension of the latch when the back is open.

Thanks I think that was it!

It was stuck Up actually, and I noticed that it would only depress when the advance lever was being operated.

I manually cycled it a few times and pressed it when it gave and now it no longer sticks up when the lever is fully closed.

Overall I think I'm really liking the rangefinder experience. 🙂

It took a bit of practice but now it's becoming second nature.
It's easy to bring up to my eye, frame, and focus. And I feel very present in the moment.

I thought people were being pretentious when they talked about these things, but there are definitely some non-tangible qualities to using a rangefinder.

Glad to hear the rangefinder is resonating with you. Enjoy it, use it a lot until you barely notice it ... and then get on with Photography. That's what I find them really good at... 🙂

I post photos to my account on Flickr.com and link them here and to various other forums for sharing. It's pretty easy to do and nets one repository for my photos on-line rather than half a dozen different threads, galleries, etc.
