There should be a small latch under the door. Sometimes grime will cause it to stick. Open the door, take a look. I've cleaned the latch on other cameras with a little alcohol to allow it to move freely. Worth a look.

I tried to press the latch a few times when the door was last open, is there a trick to it?Yep, see the little silver bit in the edge where the door closes? That's what should move back and forth to reset IIRC from my Bessa R a lifetime ago. This is an internet picture of a R3M like yours.

Thanks I think that was it!The latch should be easy to press IF it is in the correct position. It sounds like it is getting stuck in the down position, and not coming up to the correct position with the back open. In that case- do not force it. Post a picture showing the extension of the latch when the back is open.
